Chris Pittman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Chris, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up almost everyday between 5:30am – 6:00AM to let my dog Hercules out to use the bathroom. Rain or Shine!
When I tell people the time I get up, they are shocked because usually you will hear something like that from people who have kids.
I am so used to it, and now it has become second nature. Don’t get me wrong It can be challenging in the winter with the cold weather, but we just layer up and make it work.
Afterwards I usually sit and watch tv for a bit while I check emails and scroll through socials before getting ready for work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chris Pittman. I am a portrait and fashion photographer based out of the Washington DC Area. I have been a portrait photographer for the past 7 years, and have watched my photography business grow and evolve.
I use both film and digital cameras. My first film camera was a Pentax K-1000 which uses 35mm film. I now shoot a majority of my film portraits using my Mamiya 645 which is a medium format camera.
The past two years my main focus has been fashion photography. I have been working with local brands with a goal of being able to work directly with high fashion and street brands that I love. Specifically street brands like Stussy, Supreme, MNML, etc would be who I would most want to work with if given the opportunity.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
This a loaded question and hard to answer lol.
I think lies break bonds between people. Doesn’t matter if it’s a friend, family, or a co-worker. A lie, even a simple one can leave a stain of distrust behind. You start to wonder what else are you being lied to about and by who.
Honesty is what can restore a broken bond. When someone owns their mistakes and speak the truth with no sideline excuses, you can begin to build back up the trust that was lost. It takes a lot of work, and won’t happen overnight but it can happen.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“Your braver than you’ll ever know”
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That “likes” and “views” on social media defines your level of success.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I recognize as I’m writing this answer how basic and cookie cutter it is but I honestly feel most at peace when I am at home, after a long productive day, feet up on the couch, good food, and watching whatever I call my favorite show at the moment.
