Daniel Torres shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Daniel , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think people don’t see the complex technical aspect that goes into a broadcast as well as the amount of preparation. People just turn on the television and it’s all there without thinking of what goes into it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Daniel Torres and I am currently serving in my third year as the voice of Barry University Athletics in Miami Shores. I also founded and own my sports media company PlugTalkSports that hosts four different podcasts throughout the week as well as a website with articles regarding the top headlines in sports. I am also currently pursuing my masters degree through Universidad Europea in partnership with Real Madrid in sports business and management.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I would say a gentleman by the name of Terrell Forney who works for WPLG the local ABC affiliate in Miami. Back when Dwyane Wade decided to leave the Miami Heat for the Chicago Bulls I was tweeting a lot about the situation as one aspiring sports journalist would do and Forney took notice of my tweets. He asked if he could interview me for a segment for the local news regarding Wade’s departure and it was that interview that made me realize that I wanted to be in front of the camera talking sports. Mr. Forney saw that talent in myself before I fully realized.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I can’t say there was times where I was close to throwing in the towel but definitely have been moments where I’ve thought maybe this isn’t for me or my confidence was really low. After the 2021 season in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami CF it was best if I didn’t return to the club due to personal reasons I was not willing to put over myself. I ended up being hired at Miami-Dade College but in this business you learn how to grow thick skin when you’re out in the spotlight. I received a lot of negative comments that I was washed up or that I wasn’t as good as they thought I was and how can I go from professional soccer down to a community college. At times those comments hit my confidence but as time went on and I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to block out the noise and focus on the path that God has for me.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
What you see is what you get. There’s people in this business who have built up their own persona and all credit to them if it works for them but God only created one Daniel Torres. That’s the person I like to be on and off camera.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that when I’m gone people see that I overcame anxiety and depression through the strength of Jesus Christ. I was able to get baptized and start living out my faith publicly. I was gifted the tool of my voice and communication to tell the story of others in sports but he also gifted me a voice to spread the good news of God. My life’s work isn’t only sports but to be a role model and leader in this world and an ambassador of the kingdom of God. I hope that my legacy is one of God’s love and serving others.
