Darcy Dunham Jr of Detroit, MI on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Darcy Dunham Jr shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Darcy, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
What’s a “normal day”?
Honestly, every day is a little different—but most mornings start the same. Around 7:30 AM, I begin with prayer to center myself. I then spend about 20 minutes reviewing the analytics from the previous day’s content across all my platforms (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube). Based on what the data tells me, I choose a topic, determine the content format (skit, talking-head, reaction video, etc.), and dive into shooting, editing, and scheduling. My goal is to have everything wrapped up by 9:00 AM so I can shift into my full-time role as a Content Strategist.

During lunch, I catch up on LifeWithDarcy emails, reply to comments, and, when possible, create follow-up content—and hopefully remember to eat! After 5:00 PM, my time is fully devoted to my family, with an intentional focus on giving my wife my undivided attention.

Monday through Friday, I strive to maintain a healthy balance between work, passion, and life—and I think I’ve found a rhythm that works.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
What’s up my family!
I’m Darcy—a comedian, social media influencer, and marketing expert who’s passionate about sharing real-life stories to make people laugh, learn, and relate. Through my unique point of view, I create content rooted in shared experiences that speak to the heart and hit with humor.

I’ve grown a community of over 100K amazing family members, and my content is made for anyone who loves real talk about relationships, Black culture, manhood, and clean comedy.

If that sounds like your vibe, follow me on all platforms @LifeWithDarcy—and come join the family!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
The person who saw me before I ever saw myself? Without a doubt—my wife.
(F.Y.I., as a husband, that’s the only acceptable answer!)

She’s actually the one who encouraged me to start making videos based on the wild, hilarious stories I’d tell her. She gave me the confidence to share my experiences with the world, constantly reminding me that I have a gift—not just for making people laugh, but for helping them feel seen and understood.

She always told me I had a way of delivering a message that sticks, without ever talking down to people. And she was right.

Without her, there would be no LifeWithDarcy—at least not the one you know today.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Was I ready to give up? More like—how many times did I want to quit!

Comedy is completely subjective. Some days, you feel like the next Dave Chappelle or Kevin Hart. Other days, you wonder if you’re even funny at all. In those early stages, the low points hit hard. I had moments where I was ready to throw in the towel and fade into the background.

It was tough spending hours creating a 15-minute YouTube video, only to have it watched by my wife, my mom, my dad, and my auntie.

But here’s a word for all my fellow content creators: DON’T GIVE UP.
If you focus on honing your craft instead of chasing vanity metrics like likes, shares, and followers… eventually, you’ll surpass your own expectations.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The Darcy you see on your phone, tablet, or TV screen is the same Darcy you’ll meet in real life. The only difference? My personality turns all the way up when I’m on camera or performing.

I take pride in being genuine. I’m not playing a character—I’m just being me. And the best compliment I can get is when people say, “You’re real. I see myself in you.” That’s what it’s all about.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I believe I have a deep understanding of the human experience. With over a decade in marketing, I’ve learned how people think, search, and connect with their communities.

That insight allows me to speak on topics that transcend race, class, and gender. Even when I focus on my own perspective—as a Black, married man—I often hear from a diverse audience saying things like, “I went through that too,” or “I’m not Black, but I felt this.”

At the end of the day, no matter how we label ourselves or others, we’re all human—and truthfully, none of us have it all figured out.
