Darrin Pryor of Houston/Pearland on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Darrin Pryor. Check out our conversation below.

Darrin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
This is such a great question to ask as an ice breaker. If I’m being honest, I’ve felt the most love in recent time. When I was laid off from my job in 2024, I didn’t know what was next in my life. Internally, I was wondering how was I going to survive, am I going back to Corporate America, or what will my finances look like. I have been blessed to still maintain a life since the loss of the job; however, my fraternity brothers, friends, and family members have really shown me so much love, support, and hope. I thought I was a humble individual, but going through this season has truly shown me that I still had work to do within myself. I’ve always been an independent and self-sufficient person, but I had to learn and be ok with receiving help even when I thought I didn’t need it. One of my closest friends from back home said “Even when you don’t think you need help whether it’s food, advice, prayer, or financial assistance, be humbled enough to receive your blessings. You are receiving your fruit that you have given out throughout your life.” The statement spoke volumes and I will forever cherish those people who have been there for me through it all. I have so much love and respect for those individuals. Love you all.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Darrin Pryor. I am an Event and Headshot Photographer located here in Houston, TX. My business is called hDPixelz LLC. Seasonly, I offer other services that may include concert photography, studio/portraits, graduation, wedding/engagement, and holiday mini sessions. Currently, I am in the season of booking more events where I am able to network with other like minded individuals and make meaningful connections. Putting the customer first will always be the first priority. My goal is to capture moments that will last for a lifetime.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that has served its purpose and must now be released would be the part of me that downplays myself as if I don’t put in the time, work, dedication to be in the spaces I deserved to be in. I have always felt that I needed to dim my light to accommodate friends, associates, and others around because I didn’t want to seem cocky or overconfident when in actuality, the flowers were well deserved. I’ve always shined a light that has always attracted different types of people which has allowed me to provide them with love, hope, optimism, a safe space, and some form of peace. I’m one of a kind and I will forever remember that moving forward.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
A fear that has held me back the most in my life would be having the fear of life uncertainty or change. Even though I have always adapted to different scenarios in life, I tend to allow myself to become complacent because I allow comfortability to keep me in a place that is considered safe. I am in the mental space now where I have to be open to new beginnings and taking the initiative to make my opportunities myself. While making the opportunities, I have to also remember that those opportunities may open unexpected doors where I need to be able to rise to the occasion. Nobody on this planet will ever be ready for challenges, but as long as you know to always put your best foot forward and give yourself grace, everything will be fine.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes! The public version of me is the real me. Jokingly, I always tell people that I will be one of the coolest persons that they will ever meet. What you see on social media is who you get in person. I do not have the emotional capacity to live multiple lives. I do everything with love and no alternative motives. I have a win/win perspective. I’m goofy, random, lovable, kind, supportive, and giving.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I’m either back around my family in Memphis or I’m at the beach listening to the ocean waves.
