Denise Schonwald’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We recently had the chance to connect with Denise Schonwald and have shared our conversation below.

Denise, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have a morning routine I have practiced for several years. I begin by meditating for about fifteen minutes with crystals, which help me feel grounded and peaceful. After I have finished my morning meditation, I make myself a cup of coffee and walk outside onto our lanai to watch the sun rise. We have a large bird feeder in our backyard, and as the sun starts to come up, the birds begin to wake up and come in to feed. In Florida, our weather is almost always warm, and we have a variety of birds that either migrate or are here all year long. For the first hour of my day, I don’t use any technology in order to stay fully present.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a nationally licensed mental health counselor and a former critical care nurse. I left nursing over a decade ago to go back to school for Psychology. I have a private practice in Sarasota, Florida, but I see clients throughout the United States. I actively volunteer my time to talk to firefighters, law enforcement, and first responders about the importance of mental health. I have recorded over thirty podcasts, all talking about mental health and how our mental health impacts our physical health. Combining both my licenses, along with my spiritual approach, helps patients heal physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I first started practicing psychology, I noticed how many of my patients who were struggling with the same mental health problem also had related physical problems. I initially thought it was a coincidence until I began learning about chakras and energy. Now, I see the world and everything through energy, which has helped me in business, relationships, and situations. It has also helped me become introspective.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
After years of spiritual work, I have come to realize that suffering is God’s or the Universe’s way of teaching, guiding, and helping me grow. This has helped take the sting out of tough times for me. When something happens that I don’t like or can’t change, I say, “What do you want me to learn from this?” If you think about it, suffering creates awareness. If life were easy, we wouldn’t appreciate the good times as much. I also know I get to control how I go through tough times. I don’t have to like what is happening, but I can accept it and find meaning in it.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
There is no one cultural value that I prioritize more than others, but for my way of life, I follow The Ten Indian Commandments:
-Remain close to great spirit.
-Show great respect for your fellow beings.
-Give assistance and kindness wherever needed.
-Be truthful and honest at all times.
-Do what you know to be right.
-Look after the well-being of mind and body.
-Treat the earth and all that dwell thereon with respect.
-Take full responsibility for your actions.
-Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good.
-Work together for the benefit of mankind.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace in my home. I have always loved a lot of colors, and my home is a reflection of that. People who come into my home often mention how warm and calm my home feels. If you think about it, your home should be where you feel safe, blessed, and at peace.
