Developing Discipline: Stories & Insights

Many of the most impressive entrepreneurs and creatives in our community exhibit a high degree of self-discipline and so we asked some of them to share their backstories of how they developed their self-discipline.

My self discipline comes from many years of honing my craft and understanding everything that goes into leading a band (booking gigs, promoting, keeping a good reputation, practicing, etc). I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, so I had to accept the responsibilities that come along with that freedom. It’s been very difficult and some times I wish someone else would take over but it has also taught me a lot about professionalism and connecting with people. Read more>>

For me I feel like my self discipline comes from just realizing I only have one life & I want to make my mark while I’m here. As an independent artist we don’t have time to wait for a handout. Nobody is going to do the things that need to be done for you. Life is short & if you want something you have to go get it by any means. Read more>>

Self-discipline is a mandatory requirement for a writer, as there won’t be someone urging you to sit at your computer and start crafting stories. You have to create a story, draft it out, and write. Most days you won’t get praised for your work, so you just have to keep going and going. Writing is for people who don’t mind late gratification and in such challenging circumstances, sometimes it is hard to find the self-discipline to sit down in front of your work and face the blank page. Knowing I didn’t want to struggle throughout my lifetime! I’ve always worked hard and give 110% in all that I do! Lacking self discipline is a recipe for disaster. My mom was tough on us growing up and held us accountable for everything! Along with being accountable made room for self discipline. Read more>>

Self discipline is a very important topic for myself as an artist. A few years back I was not in the right mindset/environment and wasn’t seeing progress within my art or personal growth in general. So I took a big step back from the things that were not providing me growth and cut out some people that were holding me back and promoting toxic behavior. I started really just focusing on how to become better at my craft. I’m personally scared of failing and not being able to support myself off my passion, so I feel that fear fuels my fire to keep enhancing my art and myself so that I can keep doing what I love. I believe that what you do consistently, you will eventually become. My self discipline comes from who I want to be. Self-discipline isn’t outright denial of your desires or deserts, it’s harmony with the you that defines your legacy. I grew up with parents who lived the values of hard work, resilience and fortitude daily. Leaving the islands and emigrating to the United States, they knew that a better life existed for us, so we were encouraged to focus on our education and personal development. Read more>>

Growing up in the mid-80’s/90’s I had a lot of independence. I was what they called a ‘Latch Key Kid’. I would ride my bike to school in the 4th grade and stay after school playing with friends til before dark. Even though they are immigrants they are still from that post-war “Baby Boomer” generation. My parents were mainly focused on making money and what was directly in front of them business wise. I wasn’t technically an only child but spent a lot of time alone.  Read more>>

Not coming from the most privileged situation as a child allowed me to view the lives of others and at times wish I could have traded spots with them. As life continued and I aged I realized at a young age no one was coming to hand over to me a better life or the life I truly desired on a silver platter. Even if they could, why would they? I knew it would have to be me solely that demanded my reality or play the cards I was dealt. I wasn’t a fan of the cards I was dealt! Read more>>

I believe my self-discipline started with playing youth sports. Read more>>
