We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dorothé Kanku. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Dorothé, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I am most proud of trying to use my creative gifts to help others every time. I’ve curated many events aimed to help other creatives’ businesses be exposed & display/sell their work, I’ve had a store in the mall a few years ago for the same reason & selected local artists to come sell their products/brand merchandize. There are plenty, but behind the scenes that nobody sees or knows, I’ve lost alot of money trying to give back, and alot of what I’ve done came out of my own pocket, my own savings. I’ve never had grants or government funds to do any of it, the difference-I don’t regret doing any of it that way, because I know my purpose is to always give back and be of service, whether I have it all, or not & that it’ll always come back 10 fold for me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey! My name is Dorothé Kanku, owner & creative behind “SAKU.” – a fresh body care brand that consists of scented body products & aimed to aid those who have sensitive skin/conditions to help soothe, moisturize, & heal your skin, while smelling delectable.
I started this brand not only because dry skin and flare ups weren’t just seasonal, but were my norm for many years, but to create generational wealth. I didn’t come from much, so I decided that much will come from me. Lotions never lasted longer than an hour before drying up my skin & making it itchy again, and I was so tired of reapplying just to suffer from flare ups & irritation all over again. I’ve longed to have a product made just for me, that not only moisturizes, smells good, nourishes, and heals, but also something I can feel confident in when wearing, & try to help others just like me, who suffer from dry skin, irritating skin conditions like eczema/psoriasis, & were looking for a natural solution.
Therefore, I’ve created hand-made, cruelty free, vegan-friendly products that were formulated through months of testing, trial, & error, and I am proud of the results & that others are loving it too!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I was told I wouldn’t make it, that I wasn’t going to amount to nothing & end up like my friends who are no longer living. I believed it at the time because it’s all I knew. I grew up always seeing death, burying my childhood friends & having to walk past their house everyday for school, & dealt with severe depression for over a decade, before finally defeating it. I wasn’t supposed to still be here, but God kept me through it all, and although I’m not where I want to be in life yet, I know I’ve beat the odds, I helped others & gave back, I’ve been featured on the news on TV, radio stations, & articles, because I have a purpose that I intend to continue to try & fulfil, and that is enough for me.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of nobody supporting what you believe in and work hard for, but I’ve learned that the right people will always support & believe in you, & to focus on those people who pour into you, but that you must first believe in yourself, and believe that you CAN do it first.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
That I am called to serve, that is my purpose while still breathing on Earth, and that no matter what business or project or idea I may have, I will always find a way to try and give back to others. I must keep going because my life isn’t for me, it’s for others.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I know I’m useful to others & appreciated by those who care for me. When someone shares with me that I inspired them to do something they were going to quit doing, and when they express I helped change their perspective and they ended up in a better place because of it.
