We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Matthew Nuesse and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Matthew, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
The most surprising thing I have learned about my customers is their resilience. Through the ups and down (both physically and emotionally) of a weight loss journey they just keep moving forward.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dr. Matthew Nuesse of Brand NUE Weight Loss. From the time I started practicing my mission has been to help as many people in our community get as healthy as possible. For over a decade now I have been focusing, almost exclusively, on helping people lose weight. My goal now is for Brand NUE Weight Loss to be the #1 alternative to GLP-1 medications for weight loss. I want people to understand that with the right attitude, proper supplementation and slight modifications to lifestyle, life changing outcomes are possible.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
During my last year of school I interned at at low income clinic. I noticed that the majority of the patients that i would see had preventable disease that were largely based on their lifestyle. The underlying cause of the poor lifestyle decisions seemed to be a lack of information and a lack of economic access to healthier choices. It was at exactly that point that I decided to focus on bettering health above simply treating disease. I still believe that all people have a fundamental right to feel healthy in their own bodies.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
This is an easy one. Negative situations (suffering, failure, etc.) have taught me how to be appreciative of what I have. My professional experience has not always been a smooth ride. During challenging times I am reminded that I still get to choose to get up every morning and hopefully make a positive impact in someone else’s life. The other side of that coin is that sometimes I take all that I have in my life for granted and require the struggle to reset mentally.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
In my opinion, the biggest lie in the weight loss industry is that weight is out of a persons control. This way of marketing weight loss is not new and has a way of disempowering individuals. It is much easier to sell a product if IT is the thing that will cause weight loss, and without it, all hope is lost. I stand by the conviction that people should instead be empowered to make changes in their lives t facilitate weight loss. I certainly use tools, plans, coaching to facilitate this, but clients must understand that the foundation for success is themself. It seems unfortunate to me that it is easier to push people over when they are vulnerable than to build them up.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When have you had to bet the company?
Right now! Being a natural weight loss company means that we are betting that people will still value that service. I know that people need the service we provide but the market ultimately decides which business models continue on. The next 2-3 years are very important to us.
