Edna Mancia of Houston on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Edna Mancia. Check out our conversation below.

Edna, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
For me, it’s taking myself to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. I recently became a member, and it’s been amazing to have a place where I can wander, explore the permanent collections, and check out all the special exhibits they bring in. It’s become one of my favorite ways to unwind and feel inspired.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the Executive Director of Communications and Marketing for Friends of El Salvador, where I lead the organization’s storytelling, community outreach, and strategic communications. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Houston, I’m a proud first-generation Salvadoran American committed to growth, mental health advocacy, and empowering underserved communities. I believe deeply in the power of self-love, balance, and intentional storytelling, and I strive to apply these practices to uplift others.

Through my work with Friends of El Salvador, I have the privilege of supporting initiatives that honor Salvadoran culture, address community needs, and amplify the voices of those often overlooked. Every project is an opportunity to educate, empower, and inspire, whether by connecting donors to impact, supporting local leaders, or cultivating storytelling that centers dignity and hope.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that shaped me was realizing how often I was treated as if I were less than, and noticing that no one stood up for me. Experiencing that taught me the importance of speaking up and using my voice. Now, knowing how powerful it is to be heard, I make it a priority to stand up for others, because everyone deserves kindness, support, and someone in their corner.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
This is what I would say to my younger self, “I want you to know that you are stronger than you realize, and you will get through so much more than you think. Every challenge is a chance to learn, and even when things feel hard, never lose your curiosity or your big heart. Keep being kind, keep exploring, and always trust yourself. You are enough just as you are.”

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is real, but it’s not the full story. What people see is the most intentional and confident part of who I am, the part that wants to lead with kindness, purpose, and clarity. But, like anyone else, I also have more private layers: the moments of doubt, the personal healing, and the quiet growth that happens away from the spotlight. The public me is true, but the private me is where I recharge, reflect, and stay connected to what matters most. Both sides are real; they just show up in different ways.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I have moments just for myself, with my journal in hand. Sometimes I take myself to a quiet coffee shop or wander through the sculpture garden at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, letting my eyes take in the views, the people, and the buildings, while my mind reflects on my own life.

Long runs bring me a different kind of peace, the steady rhythm of my feet hitting the pavement, the focus on each step and the route ahead, clearing my mind and grounding me in the present.

I also find peace in the small rituals of home, a clean space, music playing softly in the background, and preparing meals that are not only delicious but nourishing. These moments of reflection, movement, and care remind me to slow down, breathe, and feel fully present.
