Elena Markelova’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We recently had the chance to connect with Elena Markelova and have shared our conversation below.

Elena, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: When was the last time you felt true joy?
This spring I was in Italy for an international watercolor festival with my artwork. Of course I was honored to have my painting selected for such huge event, but the best part was to be surrounded by so many like-minded people from all over the world! We painted and laughed together, shared our mutual struggles and inspired each other with different ideas. I felt like my true self, filled with so much joy and light, I was simply glowing with happiness! Now I aim to recreate similar experience for my students and art community in Vancouver.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a watercolor artist creating nature and wildlife-inspired artwork that blends animal portraits with their natural environments in a unique double exposure style. My business is rooted in a deep love for the outdoors, from original paintings I create to art retreats I host internationally, every project is meant to spark a sense of wonder, peace, and connection to the wild. I hope my art encourages others to slow down, appreciate the natural world, and recognize the importance of protecting it. Through both my work and regular contributions to conservation organizations, my mission is to inspire care for the environment and bring a little more beauty into people’s lives.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My artist’s journey began when I was very little. I remember myself enjoying painting and having my artwork exhibited at kindergarten; but it was my mom who helped me to set this path as my only way in life, and I’m so grateful for that. She signed me up for art school when I was 10 years old. I still remember that day so vividly! It was a sunny day during summer holidays, I was painting in my room, something that I’ve done very often being a shy and sensitive child. And my mom came in and pretty much just said “Let’s go, we are going to sign you up for an Art School!”. She always saw something special in me, and always supported my art projects no matter where they would lead me. It wasn’t easy for my parents to let me go to an art university to another city when I was 17, but they also saw that I was very serious about becoming a creative professional. They would never miss my exhibitions and would always come to support me at any art events, and I’m so so thankful for that!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there have definitely been moments when I felt like giving up. Balancing the roles of being a mom, wife, artist, and business owner hasn’t always been easy—there are days when the demands of family life and running a business leave little energy for creativity. The pressure of deadlines, financial uncertainty, and the constant juggling of responsibilities can feel overwhelming. But in those times, I remind myself why I started: my love for painting, for nature, and for sharing that beauty with others. That passion keeps me moving forward, even when the balance feels impossible to find.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe that every individual has a unique purpose, even if it isn’t always clear at first. I feel the Universe has a way of gently highlighting our path—through small signs, opportunities, or even challenges that push us in the right direction. When we listen to those moments and stay true to ourselves, doors begin to open that align with who we are meant to be. I can’t prove this, but I’ve experienced it in my own journey as an artist. Following my passion, even when it was difficult, has always led me to where I was supposed to go.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will remember me as a gentle soul who used her art and her voice to make the world a little better. Someone who found beauty in nature, shared it with others, and encouraged people to care for the earth and its creatures. I’d like to be remembered not only for my paintings, but for the love and intention I put into them—for living with kindness, staying true to myself, and inspiring others to do the same. If my work and my actions help even a little in leaving the world more beautiful, that would be enough.
