We’re excited to chat with Elizabeth Raley about Maus 1 & 2. Check out our conversation below.
Elizabeth, it’s always a great day when we have a chance to connect. Thanks for taking the time to share one of your favorite books with us. What can you tell us about Maus 1 & 2?
These two books are graphic (illustrated) novels that depict the Holocaust from WWII told by mice instead of humans. It describes the time leading up to the war and their story throughout.
Great, so maybe you can get into a bit more detail about why this book feels relevant to you and perhaps you can touch on any lessons or insights that resonated with you?
With our current political climate in the USA, there are many parallels to what happens in these books to what may happen under our new leadership. It won’t look the same since it’s now about slightly different groups of people being targeted, but the message is still there. To promote awareness and empathy.
Did you relate to any of the characters or their experiences?
Yes, as part of a couple of marginalized groups, the characters in these books face some challenges that I fear may happen for others.
How did you discover this book?
Many of my friends started reading these books because they are on the Banned Books list in Florida and other places. Places that want to hide the truth from the citizens.
