Erica Everett of New York City on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Erica Everett shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Erica, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Who are you learning from right now?
I love a good self-help book, and a few years back my friend recommended Louise Hay’s ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ – which I am only just now getting around to reading! It’s an incredible deep dive into the power of your mind and its capability for healing through self-love and positive thinking. I’m learning something incredible and mind-opening on every page.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a creative multi-hyphenate – actress, writer, dramaturg, and producer. I love traveling and have spent time living on both coasts of the states as well as London for six years. My travels and time in each city have massively shaped me as an individual and an artist.

As an actor, I tend to gravitate towards dramatic roles where the character is undergoing struggle, trauma, loss, etc. I love the challenge of finding these characters’ drives, their urge to continue on despite their hardships, and playing with how they mask and reveal their vulnerability.

As a writer, I particularly love exploring female-led narratives about perseverance, and the many ways one addresses and copes with life’s challenges. This past year, I made my writing debut in New York City at the Chain Theatre with my short play, ‘Mirexia’, which was about the surprising comfort of random interactions; as two women, each coping with their own form of loss, cross paths one night in a local bar. My next project is a full-length play exploring the shift in female autonomy and self-determination we are currently experiencing in both America and abroad.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I think – and maybe this is my recently spent time with the words of Louise Hay influencing me here – but my relationship to myself is and has always been the thing that has shaped and continues to shape me the most. I am utterly aware of when I am feeling sparkly and limitless and when I am feeling the complete opposite. And despite the enormous amount of love and support I am lucky to experience from my friends and family, how I view myself is always determined by what I feed myself on a given day. Some days this is a blessing, some days – a curse. But I know the strength of my own self-love and rely on myself time and time again to nourish the person I wish to be and to become.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Keep dreaming big. But make sure those dreams include dreams for your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, etc. Not just your teens and 20s…

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe that there’s a higher power out there looking out for us. I can’t name it, but I do believe in “what’s meant for you won’t pass you by” and “everything happens for a reason”. I believe we’re led down the right path for us, even if we resent the twists and turns in the moment. The more you resist and rage against a turn you don’t like, the longer it’ll take for you to get to the nice bit the path was leading you towards all along.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Binge-watching Stranger Things season 5. I have no regrets!
