Fiona Wang of Sydney & Bali on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Fiona Wang. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Fiona, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Doing everything alone – in the past I always did things with friends, family or a partner. But as someone whose travelling constantly and growing my business in two different countries, it’s no longer possible to always do things with someone else because others have their own schedules and places to be. Now I frequently fly solo, eat out at restaurants solo, and even solo travel which used to sound quite scary to me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Fiona and im a travel content creator and business owner – I am currently the Owner of Mango Mango Bali and the Fluid Project while maintaining my social media pages heyfionawang.

What makes things interesting is that my background is actually in music, I started as a music teacher and I love spending time with children. I genuinely have no business, content creation or social media background however have managed to create a career out of this.

Nowadays I spend my days travelling asia, learning from other businesses while slowly building my own businesses.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child I believed I wasn’t naturally smart – I also believed I didn’t have what it takes to be a “business owner” and so i always dreamed of being a good 9-5 corporate employee.

Now I realise its in my nature to work for myself, and that it doesn’t matter how “smart” i am, being sucessful in something only requires ambition, the capability to learn new things and consistency.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The feeling of wanting to give up is not really a once or twice experience, as a business owner and a content creator, I often experience huge doubts and lows – wanting to give up actually crosses my mind all the time.

But I always just tell myself that there are always highs and lows – the people who are doing well or suceed experience the same things but they are simply those can push through the lows no matter how low.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I would say the public version of me is the real me – but only the “highlights” side. Everything I show on social media is exactly how I feel as it appears, but I don’t show the lows or the difficulties. Not because I don’t want to be genuine, but because I believe the private side of our life should be kept private and we need to protect our energy.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
I actually regret not going to study overseas or work overseas while I was in my university days or early work days. I feel there is so many lessons in learning to work and study in a whole different system and culture which trains you to be more aware, open minded and adaptable.

I also do regret learning too many different skills instead of getting really good at one or two things, i’ve learnt that sucess can be found ANYWHERE as long as you stand out in that area.
