Decision making can be stressful and anxiety inducing, but the ability to make decisions quickly is often what separates the most effective leaders from others. We connected with some of the best and brightest do-ers we know and asked them how they developed their decision-making skills.

I developed my decision making skills primarily through thinking about the needs of others and what would be the best way to meet those needs. It has been helpful to take time talking to stakeholders such as my students, community partners, staff, and school officials to see what their needs are and write them down. After writing down their needs, I have practiced developing a plan and compared that plan based on the identified needs of all stakeholders to see if I have taken into account how people will be impacted by decisions I make. For me, I will always prioritize how I feel about something, rather than what I think of it, even though the two are connected together. But when making the decision, whatever excites me the most, I will go for it. Sometimes if it even scares me the most, it means there’s an uncomfortability to it, which means there will be growth. Working in animation is a whole training ground for decision-making! Having the chance to lead the IP project LaylaBug for Gasket Studios and direct my debut short film, The Tale of Two Cruel Rulers, taught me that decision-making isn’t just about solving problems—it’s about setting clear goals, constantly evaluating progress, and staying adaptable. When you work on a film, you make millions of macro and micro decisions (you’re basically creating a whole universe that didn’t exist before!), and every decision feels deeply personal.
