How do you keep your creativity alive?

Keeping your creativity alive has always been a challenge, but in the era of work from home, where the lines between work life and home life have blurred and where burnout and social disconnection are rising, creativity is at risk. We’ve asked some of the most creative folks we know for advice on how to keep one’s creativity alive.

I think everyone struggles with staying creative sometimes. There are so many creative people out there that it’s easy to feel like a fraud. To keep my creativity going, I like to look at magazines and follow my favorite artists. I love to dive into several genres of music. I think listening to the music who “made you” or “shaped you” is important, too. Learning is also really important to me. I like to watch documentaries and videos about different artists and art movements. I think it helps to learn about the history of different mediums, cultures, and artists because it inspires me to be more creative. Read more>>

With the fast-paced changing digital society that we live in, it is easy to get lost with all the distractions that present themselves both personally and professionally. I am an artist and I always thrived in creating and collaborating thru music, performing arts and fashion so it comes to me naturally that I crave to do something that allows me to be in a creative realm whether it’s via projects that I do within my social platform or collaborating with like-minded, creative individuals and artists. It is important also to consider and distinguish what are the new trends that will allow me to be unique and relevant. Read more>>

Creativity in the food industry is just as essential as tools are for a mechanic. We pride ourselves on providing unique, fun, and interesting food options for our patrons. When we first began our business, we had no clear idea of what our menu would look like. So, our home kitchen became a test kitchen of sorts. Playing with flavor profiles, innovating traditional food into unique dishes, it all started at home. When we found a solid set of menu items, we launched into action. Perfecting the menu took time and resilience, and a lot of patience. Once our food and our brand began catching fire in our valley, we began testing new ideas again. We are known for having a rotating menu, so that is always fuel to the creativity fire for us. I would say that none of us get bored of trying new flavors, or trying to maintain and grow the quality of what we put out. We have a deep connection with food and provide it as such. Read more>>

I think the only reason we need to “keep it alive” is because we disconnect from it in the first place. I believe everything you need is already inside of you but it can be scary to connect to that risky side and see a different perspective. So as a result we go to exterior things to “keep it alive” things like music, nature, art pieces, plays, movies, etc. And I think all those things are amazing however, they just reflect what’s inside of us. I think even “finding” inspiration is sort of vague. I keep my creativity alive by giving in to it. I allow the ideas to flow and allow myself to be inspired during my day to day life. When I was a small child I entertained everyone at my daycare center by singing and putting on an impromptu show. Creativity for me has always been a river flowing throughout my life. I found that being active in several different disciplines (acting, writing, singing, etc.) helps to bring energy to all the different areas of creativity in my life. The other key for me was using both sides of my brain. I have a BA in Mathematics and a MFA in Theatre. I need to constantly seek out inspiration. It may come in the form of other visual artists, musicians, or just from hearing people sharing their perspectives on life and art. I also try to not take for granted the beauty in nature and architecture that surrounds us all daily. I try to remind myself that everything that surrounds us in the physical world was imagined into existence at one point. That’s pretty inspiring to think about. Many times I enjoy entertaining imaginative ideas even if I’m aware that there is no payoff or likelihood of the idea coming to fruition. It’s still a great exercise for the imagination. I kind of view the imagination like an organ, like our hearts, or brains. The more we exercise our imagination, the stronger and healthier it remains. I find great purpose in creating. And I believe the imagination is the genesis of creation. Much like the heart is the pump that keeps our blood flowing through our body. I save images I see on Instagram that inspire me. I try to remember to revisit those images when I have time, so that I can really appreciate the beauty in them without being distracted. Read more>>

Creativity looks different depending on where I am mentally, physically, and emotionally. Often, I take myself on a date to the theatre. I choose a production based on what I need: to laugh, to cry, to ponder – usually all three. I expose myself to new stories. It’s refreshing. Otherwise, I enjoy coloring in my Hocus Pocus coloring book, taking pictures of coffee shops and loved ones, journaling, or finding fashion inspiration. I also love to clean and organize. I keep my creativity alive by constantly trying to find inspiration around me, if it’s not there then I go find it! For me, the ocean is my main source of inspiration. When I get into the water and go below the surface, an entirely new world surrounds me; it opens up the floodgates of my mind and ideas begin rushing in. To keep the creativity alive, I try to create something every day, if I can’t physically shoot something then I’ll retouch a photo or plan an underwater shoot or go out to a show and capture stills of that. Creativity is like the ebb and flow of the ocean’s tides. At times, it’s a powerful wave crashing into the shoreline, carrying with it a rush of artistic ideas and inspiration. During these moments of high tide, it’s easy to get swept away in the flow of creativity. I embrace these moments and simply go with the flow. But, there are also times when the tide is low, and tapping into one’s creative source can feel like a challenge. To combat this, I like to experiment with different methods for sparking my imagination. Whether it’s taking a walk in nature, picking up a new hobby, reading a book, or simply breaking away from my routine, I find that these activities help to rekindle my creative flame. Additionally, surrounding myself with other creative individuals and exposing myself to a diverse range of art forms helps to keep my creativity thriving and inspired. Read more>>

Keeping creativity alive; but what exactly is creativity? Are you born with it? Is it something you can learn? Does it come from a certain part of the mind? These are questions that many people ask and that I have spent a lot of time researching. I think that all people are born with creative tendencies, and consciously or not, decide whether and how much to use it. Creativity is somewhat defined an engagement of the mind that enables alternative ways of thinking that create connections that can connect questions with actions. So, how do I keep it alive? First and foremost, I try to channel negative energy into creative energy. Some of the other traits that I believe add to keeping creativity alive are good sleep, positivity, non-conformity, diversity, nature and a slightly chaotic environment. I am often inspired by travel and the different colors, sounds and environments that we encounter when we explore different areas. Whether it be in your backyard or across the world, there is always something new to be found. Color to me is very inspirational. My collections have often been influenced by the two places that I call home which are Colorado and Southern California. The beach and the mountains. You can call my style “Boots on the Beach”. I typically have some sort of side project that is creative for the sake of creativity. Currently, I’m working on a short film with another work colleague of mine, Daniel Jones. If not working on the short film, I play guitar or make short videos. I find that often, keeping the creative part of my mind busy keeps me positive and allows for that creativity to bleed over into my work life. In general, if you feel inspired, you tend to manage and lead better. If you allow yourself to get swept away in the current that is day to day life, you lose perspective and oversight. Somehow, flexing the creative part of my mind, allows me to avoid burn out and also keep bringing or nurturing innovation at our company. It’s very important for us to make sure that we’re still having fun! That’s why we started doing this- because we’re passionate about it and we have fun collaborating and creating. There are times during a long or difficult job where we might start feeling burnt out – like we’re completing checklists and doing managerial tasks instead of being creative. To counter that feeling, we make sure that we work on personal passion projects between client jobs. An example is our original claymation short series called Magical Cat, where we’re in complete control of the creative and we’re free to try new ideas and techniques without any risk. It’s kind of like a reward after delivering a project! We can loosen up and have some fun. But sometimes even Magical Cat can feel a little too much like work, so it’s nice to have other outlets for creativity that aren’t tied to our jobs. We tend to be hard on ourselves if we’re not producing the kind of content that people expect from us, and that anxiety can get in the way of our sense of creative freedom. Separate from each other, we have our own creative endeavors like music and illustration. These activities allow us to stay in that creative mindset without any kind of pressure from either external or internal sources. Read more>>

I’m EASILY inspired. I’m such a fan of the creative process. My mind is always working and I’m constantly writing out ideas for concepts and things I’d like to work on. It kind of stems from wanting to create a world of my own, under the Joee Spacey umbrella, and putting myself into those ideas and concepts I’d like to see into the world. By bouncing back and forth and utilizing both the practical and creative sides of my personality, I was always able to keep pushing out new works. However, like many people, I found the pandemic to be a serious dam on the flow of creativity in my life. Read more>>

What is creativity? A quick search on the web can result in many close attempts to define the term. However, the term ‘combinational creativity’ caught my eye.

Is that creative? Read more>>

Read more>>

I learned alone time ago that if I limited my creativity to a particular artform I would be doomed to failure. I know many artists focus on one medium and master that and that works well for them. But we are all not alike and a very limiting belief is to model what everyone else is doing is the path to success. I’ve grown to see that as a mistake I and others make every day. As I progressed as an artist I reached what I call crossroads. A place where inspiration appears inside me and I have the choice of following it or staying with what is safe. Beginning as a pastel artist which was a very natural medium for me I was successful creating beautiful spiritual paintings. Several years later when my family moved to the southern U.S. I stood in my backyard which was full of trees unlike Los Angeles that we left. I surround myself with people, places, and things that remind me that I’m alive. I want my work to have an authentic purpose and make a real difference in the world. I travel a lot for the life experiences, which in turn become invaluable life skills and knowledge that I can then process, translate, and pass on through my art. Building and sustaining deep bonds and connections with fellow artists and thinkers I meet along the way is essential as well. When I find a genuine connection, I am able to share myself with someone else in the most natural way – a part of me that’s truly comfortable in my own skin. I have many complexities that make up who I am, who I am becoming, and I am intending on embracing them all. The creativity that shines through our work with The Decoding Success Podcast stems from one word: curiosity. By getting curious and finding the answers to what we’re curious about, it’s developed a sense of curiosity within that is rather unmatched. That creativity has allowed us to push out our content in different ways to reach new audiences. To that point, without our curiosity, our creativity might not be on the level in which it is. So, to bolster your creativity, I’d suggest getting curious. It doesn’t mean you have to be a podcaster or content creator, but get curious in your life. Questions to ask should start with: “how?”, “why?”, “when?”, and more. Read more>>

To keep one’s creativity alive, one must live a full unapologetic life filled with risks, pain, adventures, and laughter. Creativity is the evolution of moments. Whether the moment be singular or swarming with people, penetrated by excruciating stillness or the clamor of convulsing barbarity it is a moment nonetheless. And if we dare to live more moments with boldness and take a deep gaze, creativity is living all around us. From wall-to-wall, from the milky way to the ocean floor, it’s a living breathing thing and all we have to do is tap in. My creativity stays alive by keeping my eyes open, loosening the strings of my heart, allowing my mind to explore, and giving my spirit an opportunity to wonder. Allow myself to mingle with the pieces of me that live in freedom, curiosity, awe, and courageousness. I keep my creativity alive by walking in fear, permitting blank pages to bleed, and empowering the seeds of my mind to take root. It is indeed beautifully unapologetic and complex. Read more>>

One could say that those of us who discovered the need to be constantly creative find it difficult to live life without that aspect. Wether we be photographers, painters, musicians, or stage artists. I’ve been involved in many projects. Most of those projects pertained to music, modeling, or business initiatives. When you know what your passion is, I believe that can develop creativity. You also have to challenge yourself, and want to be better. By definition, creativity means “the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.” I would also add on and say that creativity is about finding what matters to you and cultivating it into an idea or creation. This year I recently found a few things that interested me. I’ve always had a passion for owning my own business and providing a service. I recently opened up my own wedding officiant business. This is a needed service for couples whenever they want to legally marry. I aimed to create a business that weren’t like the others. I didn’t want a typical name like, “MaKayla The Officiant.” I wanted a name that pretty much summed me up. “The Dazzling Wedding Officiant” is my business name and it is self explanatory. I chose the word “dazzling” to describe my uniqueness, boldness, and exceptional skills. Also, within my business my services are tailored to the client’s needs. I aim to provide exceptional service with a personable touch. I want my clients to feel comfortable. Creativity lies with the beholder. Anytime I officiate a wedding I want to put a personal stamp on it to make the couple feel great. Officiating requires great personable and communication skills. I believe that requires creativity.
