Keeping your creativity alive has always been a challenge, but in the era of work from home, where the lines between work life and home life have blurred and where burnout and social disconnection are rising, creativity is at risk. We’ve asked some of the most creative folks we know for advice on how to keep one’s creativity alive.

I think everyone struggles with staying creative sometimes. There are so many creative people out there that it’s easy to feel like a fraud. To keep my creativity going, I like to look at magazines and follow my favorite artists. I love to dive into several genres of music. I think listening to the music who “made you” or “shaped you” is important, too. Learning is also really important to me. I like to watch documentaries and videos about different artists and art movements. I think it helps to learn about the history of different mediums, cultures, and artists because it inspires me to be more creative. Read more>>

With the fast-paced changing digital society that we live in, it is easy to get lost with all the distractions that present themselves both personally and professionally. I am an artist and I always thrived in creating and collaborating thru music, performing arts and fashion so it comes to me naturally that I crave to do something that allows me to be in a creative realm whether it’s via projects that I do within my social platform or collaborating with like-minded, creative individuals and artists. It is important also to consider and distinguish what are the new trends that will allow me to be unique and relevant. Read more>>

Creativity in the food industry is just as essential as tools are for a mechanic. We pride ourselves on providing unique, fun, and interesting food options for our patrons. When we first began our business, we had no clear idea of what our menu would look like. So, our home kitchen became a test kitchen of sorts. Playing with flavor profiles, innovating traditional food into unique dishes, it all started at home. When we found a solid set of menu items, we launched into action. Perfecting the menu took time and resilience, and a lot of patience. Once our food and our brand began catching fire in our valley, we began testing new ideas again. We are known for having a rotating menu, so that is always fuel to the creativity fire for us. I would say that none of us get bored of trying new flavors, or trying to maintain and grow the quality of what we put out. We have a deep connection with food and provide it as such. Read more>>

Keeping my creativity alive comes from many places I love digging deep inside of how I am feeling because creativity comes from emotion and self expressing. I have an open and growth mindset I allow myself to experience as many different things in life as I can always being open to new experiences meeting new people and learning how to do things differently and creatively. I allow myself to practice a variety of art forms and constantly work on different projects never striving for perfection but creative progress. I think the only reason we need to “keep it alive” is because we disconnect from it in the first place. I believe everything you need is already inside of you but it can be scary to connect to that risky side and see a different perspective. So as a result we go to exterior things to “keep it alive” things like music, nature, art pieces, plays, movies, etc. And I think all those things are amazing however, they just reflect what’s inside of us. I think even “finding” inspiration is sort of vague. If we connect within most of the answers are there, and if we are able to do that, then when we cherish music, nature, and all those things it’ll be from a collaboration mindset and not from a void that needs to be fulfilled by such things. I keep myself creating interesting food ideas by asking people their likes and dislikes. Also, our grandson is 3 we have him taste test several of our desserts. If kid approved we move forward. I’ve never consciously followed any kind of strategy to keep my creativity alive because I haven’t ran out of ideas for my art so far; but if I try to think how the flow of new projects is constantly running I guess it comes from my daily thoughts and activities. First, I always make art about topics that are deeply connected to my life or my obsessions. I am a critical thinker always trying to discover what is hidden behind any message that I receive. I am a very inquisitive individual. My creativity is constantly refuelled by attending art galleries, reading books, listening to podcasts, listening to music, looking at Pinterest, watching YouTube and Netflix and travelling. I like to immerse myself in lots of different art forms. This inspires me to develop ways to share my perspective, my experiences and my understanding of how I, a woman, a Black woman, an African, a child of immigrants is viewed in many different settings, and like a chameleon, sometimes I adapt myself to the environment or disrupt it like a Lion hunting for its prey. I keep my creativity alive by giving in to it. I allow the ideas to flow and allow myself to be inspired during my day to day life. I find that works a lot better than if I try to force ideas or creativity. If I feel burned out or uninspired, I know that it’s time for a break and I allow myself to take one. Maybe that means not choreographing for a while, or spending more time outside of the studio. I usually get inspired by something during my break, and that’s how I know its time to go back! Working in high tech can be a challenging and fast-paced experience, but it is also a field that values creativity and innovation. As a high-tech worker, it is essential to find ways to keep creativity alive and stay motivated. One way to achieve this is by pursuing hobbies and interests outside of work. Endurance is key when it comes to creativity. It’s important to manage your energy and check-in daily on how you’re dividing that energy in order to keep your creative spark alive. For me, I find that my creativity comes in waves, therefore I break up my writing throughout the day to match and align with these creative cycles. I never force the pen to the page, rather, I flow with the waves as they come. It’s certainly a challenge though and is something that—like all things—you get better at with practice. Read more>>

My creativity is dependent on whether or not I’m actively being a student to something or someone. It’s always been important for me to take myself out of my comfort zone and put myself into a situation or opportunity where I know nothing. It’s especially crucial at times when I think I know everything. With age there is a great temptation to assume an “expert” or “master” role at something we’ve spent our life doing, but that’s an illusion leading to quicksand. The older I get, the greater the challenge is to fight against that. Being a student, failure, humility, and small victories along the way have helped my creativity grow exponentially. I would also say, my artist peers and friends who generously give me wisdom and insight into the art spirit. Holding space for those kinds of conversations and connections are infinitely valuable to me. Read more>>

For both commissioned and personal graphic design projects, I would say variety! It took me years of professional deadlines to realize that when I’m stuck on a design, or not feeling like great ideas are sketching on paper, I can move to the computer. Usually my best designs emerge from a brief period of rest – taking a fresh look later in the day or even the next morning. Read more>>

When I was a small child I entertained everyone at my daycare center by singing and putting on an impromptu show. Creativity for me has always been a river flowing throughout my life. I found that being active in several different disciplines (acting, writing, singing, etc.) helps to bring energy to all the different areas of creativity in my life. The other key for me was using both sides of my brain. I have a BA in Mathematics and a MFA in Theatre. By bouncing back and forth and utilizing both the practical and creative sides of my personality, I was always able to keep pushing out new works. However, like many people, I found the pandemic to be a serious dam on the flow of creativity in my life. Read more>>

I need to constantly seek out inspiration. It may come in the form of other visual artists, musicians, or just from hearing people sharing their perspectives on life and art. I also try to not take for granted the beauty in nature and architecture that surrounds us all daily. I try to remind myself that everything that surrounds us in the physical world was imagined into existence at one point. That’s pretty inspiring to think about. Many times I enjoy entertaining imaginative ideas even if I’m aware that there is no payoff or likelihood of the idea coming to fruition. It’s still a great exercise for the imagination. I kind of view the imagination like an organ, like our hearts, or brains. The more we exercise our imagination, the stronger and healthier it remains. I find great purpose in creating. And I believe the imagination is the genesis of creation. Much like the heart is the pump that keeps our blood flowing through our body. I save images I see on Instagram that inspire me. I try to remember to revisit those images when I have time, so that I can really appreciate the beauty in them without being distracted. Read more>>

Creativity looks different depending on where I am mentally, physically, and emotionally. Often, I take myself on a date to the theatre. I choose a production based on what I need: to laugh, to cry, to ponder – usually all three. I expose myself to new stories. It’s refreshing. Otherwise, I enjoy coloring in my Hocus Pocus coloring book, taking pictures of coffee shops and loved ones, journaling, or finding fashion inspiration. I also love to clean and organize. I keep my creativity alive by constantly trying to find inspiration around me, if it’s not there then I go find it! For me, the ocean is my main source of inspiration. Creativity is like the ebb and flow of the ocean’s tides. At times, it’s a powerful wave crashing into the shoreline, carrying with it a rush of artistic ideas and inspiration. During these moments of high tide, it’s easy to get swept away in the flow of creativity. I embrace these moments and simply go with the flow. But, there are also times when the tide is low, and tapping into one’s creative source can feel like a challenge. To combat this, I like to experiment with different methods for sparking my imagination. Whether it’s taking a walk in nature, picking up a new hobby, reading a book, or simply breaking away from my routine, I find that these activities help to rekindle my creative flame. Additionally, surrounding myself with other creative individuals and exposing myself to a diverse range of art forms helps to keep my creativity thriving and inspired. Read more>>

Some of pop culture themes are Pokemon, Marvel, DC, Sponge Bob, Trolls, Disney, Minions, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Toy Story. For Nightmare before Christmas, I used buttons of the characters, figures, pumpkins, skulls, and colors from the movie. Read more>>

Keeping creativity alive; but what exactly is creativity? Are you born with it? Is it something you can learn? Does it come from a certain part of the mind? These are questions that many people ask and that I have spent a lot of time researching. I think that all people are born with creative tendencies, and consciously or not, decide whether and how much to use it. Creativity is somewhat defined an engagement of the mind that enables alternative ways of thinking that create connections that can connect questions with actions. So, how do I keep it alive? First and foremost, I try to channel negative energy into creative energy. Some of the other traits that I believe add to keeping creativity alive are good sleep, positivity, non-conformity, diversity, nature and a slightly chaotic environment. I am often inspired by travel and the different colors, sounds and environments that we encounter when we explore different areas. Whether it be in your backyard or across the world, there is always something new to be found. Color to me is very inspirational. My collections have often been influenced by the two places that I call home which are Colorado and Southern California. The beach and the mountains. You can call my style “Boots on the Beach”. I typically have some sort of side project that is creative for the sake of creativity. Currently, I’m working on a short film with another work colleague of mine, Daniel Jones. If not working on the short film, I play guitar or make short videos. I find that often, keeping the creative part of my mind busy keeps me positive and allows for that creativity to bleed over into my work life. In general, if you feel inspired, you tend to manage and lead better. If you allow yourself to get swept away in the current that is day to day life, you lose perspective and oversight. It’s very important for us to make sure that we’re still having fun! That’s why we started doing this- because we’re passionate about it and we have fun collaborating and creating. There are times during a long or difficult job where we might start feeling burnt out – like we’re completing checklists and doing managerial tasks instead of being creative. To counter that feeling, we make sure that we work on personal passion projects between client jobs. An example is our original claymation short series called Magical Cat, where we’re in complete control of the creative and we’re free to try new ideas and techniques without any risk. It’s kind of like a reward after delivering a project! We can loosen up and have some fun. But sometimes even Magical Cat can feel a little too much like work, so it’s nice to have other outlets for creativity that aren’t tied to our jobs. We tend to be hard on ourselves if we’re not producing the kind of content that people expect from us, and that anxiety can get in the way of our sense of creative freedom. Separate from each other, we have our own creative endeavors like music and illustration. These activities allow us to stay in that creative mindset without any kind of pressure from either external or internal sources. Read more>>
