Creativity definitely ebbs and flows just like anything else but one thing that I’ve done to keep my creative brain alive and well is to stop taking orders that don’t bring me joy. I keep my creativity alive by telling myself, “To grow you, have to be willing to get uncomfortable, nothing will ever grow in comfortability.” The best ideas for creativity come from within, finding something that inspires, if that spark is there, write the vision and make it plain to help make an idea come to fruition, never know where it may lead. Every day, I face different challenges. I believe that simply not staying still, making slight changes to my routine, keeps my creativity alive. When I mention this, I refer to the order of things, like if, instead of eating fruit first, I drink protein before, or perhaps if I decide to get dressed completely before having breakfast. Sometimes, I choose to wear different shoes when going to work. I don’t let the routine make everything boring, although getting bored sometimes can lead to creativity. Read More>>

I feel that all my inspirations and works come from an endless source that sometimes is hard for me to handle. My creativity is a beast that never rests. I don’t use the word “beast” in a negative sense, but rather as an acknowledgment of its power. It’s not that I struggle to keep it awake, it’s that sometimes I don’t know how to make it rest. In my office, I have a poster of Ingmar Bergman looking through a directors viewfinder. His movies, among others like Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, and Boots Riley, have kept me going. A lot of times, in my industry, it can be easy for photographers to get so deeply immersed in client work that everything blends together, and it can be hard to come up with new, fresh ideas. There are a few things that I’ve found personally helpful for remaining creative. The foremost is to surround myself either with people or with ideas that inspire me. The etymology of “inspire” is “to breathe life into” or to stoke the fire inside, so when I’m feeling like I need a creative boost, I’ll reach out to friends and other creatives who I know do work that excites me; or I’ll essentially start a pile of books, generally by artists who always make me want to explore new ideas with my art- whether that be subject matter, technique, style, composition, or general attitude toward creation. I believe most people possess creativity in greater quantities than we realize, but I also think creativity is greatly misunderstood. As children, society generally encourages us to be creative…from Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, to imaginary friends, creativity and imagination are qualities that are generally embraced. However, as we age, speaking about our “imaginary friends” might just get us committed. Read More>>
