How do you keep your creativity alive?

Keeping your creativity alive has always been a challenge, but in the era of work from home, where the lines between work life and home life have blurred and where burnout and social disconnection are rising, creativity is at risk. We’ve asked some of the most creative folks we know for advice on how to keep one’s creativity alive.

Matthew Hersh

As a writer and filmmaker, I’m constantly finding ways to keep my creativity alive. Writers block is real and it happens to everybody but when I want to start creating again I tend to watch film; both older movies that I’ve seen over and over as well as new movies out in theatres. I try to watch 3-5 movies a week and that’s the main form of media I consume. Even things like plays, concerts, theme parks, and escape rooms can help. Pretty much anything that involves some aspect of story-telling. Read More>>

As a creative in this fast paced, modern world we live in I have found to keep my creativity alive, I simply rest when needed. When the creativity sparks inside of me, it is alive, and keeps me moving, and grooving, and seeing the creation through from dream to bringing it into the physical. And then, just as all cycles in life, when I feel tired, and the creative spark has fizzled I fully surrender into rest. Rest for me to recharge. Rest for me to breathe. Rest for me to soak up some sun. Rest for me to sleep in, long slumbery hours. Rest for me to meditate. Rest for me to snuggle with loved one. Rest for me to cook, and eat nourishing foods. Rest for all the things. Read More>>

That is a tough question. My first advice would be to understand that creativity is like a muscle and just like every muscle, it needs to rest. I have strained my creativity many times to a point where I stopped any creative activities : writing, acting, etc. You cannot force creativity but what you can do is nurture it. In between rest, I try to stay in touch with my inner child and how excited she was to discover this world an dhow happiness was found in the tiniest of places : a puddle of mud after rain, a blue and purple hydrangea, the chirp of a dove. I believe I keep my creativity alive by staying connected with my child-like self. I also believe that staying open minded and observant of what’s around me helps me keep my creativity alive as well. Being connected with my child-like self reminds me of the little joys you can find in life, and to think like a child. The mind of an adult versus the mind of a child’s is obviously different. Children are still super curious about the world and more than willing to learn and try things again. Keeping that mentality alive in me, to some extent, most definitely helps me stay creative. Creativity starts with an idea and we’re always thinking. The ideas and the desire to enjoy ourselves through expression in multiple mediums perpetually drive us to create art. Experimenting in paint materials and formats to varying ways of incorporating visual and literary art and even music, dance and skateboarding. Art is everywhere and we love to experience interacting with it through reflecting our reactions and perspectives in our work. When a vision comes to life there is an almost euphoric sensation of expressing ourselves. Despite being a duo, we have been living in different cities for the past 3 years and attending college so the collaborative nature of our work is not as seamless as it could be. There are sometimes weeks where we don’t fully interact but after those time lapses we always have more work to show each other and more ideas to collaborate on. Read More>>

I understand that it’s less confusing for consumers to see one type of product being sold by an artist, but I’ve always had a super eclectic taste growing up. I think being diverse in the ways I am plays into how I can stay creative and excited most days. This is the reason why I have so many different types of products under my brand Spell & Sage, but they all tie in together with the same aesthetic that defines me. Read More>>

Everything is an inspiration to me. When I hear something that I like or see a painting that has just the perfect set of colors, or perfect detailing, or anything, I try my absolute hardest to create and get to something as stimulating as that. There’s a feeling of satisfaction that you get when you know you genuinely created something that you have pride in. I search for and am motivated by that feeling. I eventually want to have something I can call my personal Mona Lisa. Something truly groundbreaking for myself, and something that I know I can’t do again in this lifespan. Read More>>

Creativity is very important to me. Without it, I feel that I would have never became the person that I am today. I use my creativity to express who I am as a person and the things that I like. In doing so, I make YouTube videos about my experiences ano discoveries in attention-grabbing ways. I am always writing down ideas about the imagery, phrases, and style of how a potential video could be. To me, showing my creativity is like sharing a piece of my confidence to the rest of the world. I keep my creativity alive by staying in tune with myself. If I’m feeling burnt out or creatively stuck, I like to get outside and spend time with my thoughts. I find that when I give my mind the freedom to wander, ideas pop into my head that inspire a bigger picture idea. Meditation and moments of being “still” also help me to get out of my head and tap into my emotions, and that oftentimes brings a creative boost. Being that the last eight years, my passion has been centered around food and hospitality; I also like to keep my creativity alive by venturing out and trying new restaurants/cuisines/food trends. I love to try new dishes and then reinterpret them in a way that is familiar to me, which is an expression of creativity itself. Read More>>

As an artist, sometimes it is hard to keep creativity alive, since there are a lot of distractions nowadays, such as social media, the news, (and as a new mom, there are plenty of distractions!)… however, I realized that inspiration comes when one is relaxed, rested, recharged, even doing activities unrelated to art! And being aware of that was very important for me because that has helped me to embrace the process and enjoy the creative journey. Some other things that have helped me are as simple as carrying a sketchbook with me wherever I go, or even exploring with different materials, mediums, trying different styles, to push the boundaries of my comfort zone and even take risks, are a few things that helped me nurture my artistic growth. I keep my creativity alive by doing a lot of fun different artistic projects! Sometimes it can be photography related as in a portrait session, shooting another city or trying a new film technique. But often I like to paint on different surfaces or canvases with my friends and I love interior design/fashion so anytime I can put together a fun outfit for a night out or design a new look for a room I’m in! I keep my creativity alive by using it every day. Ever since childhood, I’ve been able to envision magical and awe-inspiring things just by looking at the world around me. A boring doctor’s office could turn into chamber of potions and spell books while a mundane book would come to life, pulling me into a second dimension of sights and colors. For a kid, this type of thinking isn’t unusual, however, for an adult or teen, it’s rather looked down upon. See, many people think that once you reach a certain age, all “childish” activities become strictly forbidden. But that’s not true. It pains me to see adults who are trapped in the ‘everyday’, stuck in a world of misery and monotony with no light at the end of the tunnel, I wish that more people could see the hidden beauty of the world, one that you can’t look at with your eyes. And while I can’t physically hand you my imagination, I do hope you’re able to find yours through me. Read More>>

Keeping my creativity alive has been a particular challenge I did not realize would be so abundant while working as a full time artist. I have the space, time, and energy to create, so why do I feel creatively bankrupt? Staying in a safe zone and making artwork that I know will sell can squash my ability to create freely. I become fearful of stepping outside of the expectations I believe people hold for my work. It is that fear that holds me back. When my creativity is empty and I am fearful of stepping into something new, I have learned that I need to get outside of myself. I know some artists look inward, but I tend to go outward.  Read More>>

In the first year, or possibly even the first couple of years, creativity was never a problem. Those first few months you’re just pouring with new ideas because you never done anything like this before. The handmade craft business tends to center around holidays & seasons. Most of us do in person festivals and markets during those times. Those simple holiday pieces are also very recognizable and often used by a large customer base. That makes it pretty easy right? So for the first couple of years you have some releases at spring with florals, at fall with pumpkins, at Christmas with trees and Santa Claus. Basically everything you would expect it to be.  Read More>>

I have been told that creativity is essentially a living creature that can exist and disappear easily, and I have been a victim of both sides of that. Keeping creativity alive is not an easy task, and requires constant effort. My college professor had a quote that he shared almost daily, “Artists are like sharks, they have to be constantly moving forward to stay alive.” Having heard that for nearly 3 years from him I still live by that, as a photographer I see the quality of my work can dip when I do not create anything, does not matter if it’s paid work or personal work. The best method for me to keep creativity alive is to not stop creating and consuming, every day I try to be a photographer as well as see what other photographers are putting into this world. If I am struggling on a particular day the best thing is to dig through a collection of inspiration I have saved and try to recreate it in my own way, Read More>>

As a professional working in the arts, creativity is my lifeblood. Staying creative is a muscle you need to constantly strengthen. One of the most important things for me is to surround myself in a creative space. When I’m not shooting, I work from my home office. And it’s FLOODED with art, colors, fun furniture. My environment is fuel for creativity. The other tip I can share is – think about something else! What I mean is, if I’m at my computer 15 hours a day trying to squeeze out every idea I have, I’m going to get burnt out. Instead, schedule consistent time to move your creative projects forward, and make sure you give your mind time to recharge! Read More>>

I found out that I have a gift when it comes to drawing, and I can also write poems and songs on a whim. A good way to keep creativity alive is to remain connected to the creator. I find that when we stay connected to the vine there is a constant flow of life- giving spiritual strength that gives insight and creativity. For me personally, my atmosphere is connected to my creativity. I pray and listen to worship music and I listen for God to give me instructions. I also find creativity in God’s nature. The greenery in the trees, the whisper of the winds, even the falling rain speaks to me. Prayer and meditation of God’s word is definitely the key to me finding creativity. Read More>>

Just by being me. staying true to my aesthetic, no matter what’s trending or popular. I always liked to stand out instead of riding waves because once the wave is oversaturated everyone will be back looking for the next different upcoming thing. That’s why I tell a lot of people who dm me asking for advice my #1 tip would be just stay yourself and reflect on your past to see what you really like. Don’t just do something because you see your favorite designer/influencer doing it. If I ever was influenced by another or something I always shifted it into my own aesthetic. I get a lot of my designs and vision from things I’d remember seeing years ago or just by traveling being out seeing different things. As a multimedia artist, I try to keep my mind open to experimenting with new mediums and finding inspiration in places I haven’t looked before. Because the primary subjects of my work include themes from nature and fantasy, I pick up a lot of little treasures I find outside to look at them more closely. I have collections of lichen covered sticks, dried fungi, bugs, rocks, dropped feathers, bones, nuts and seeds; really anything you might come across on a walk through the woods. I love to study the patterns of bark on trees, the slime trail a snail leaves as he moves across a leaf, and the way water flows over mossy stones in a creek. I might become inspired to find a way to realistically recreate these things from nature with different materials, or I might become inspired to use those themes or textures in new ways – carving wood grain into my ceramics, using acorn caps as tiny bowls for fairy homes, or crafting delicate paper flowers.
