The capacity to take risk is one of the biggest enablers of reaching your full potential and so we want to create a space where risk-takers can come together to talk about how they’ve developed their capacity for risk taking.
The Vital Rage

In the past I have been guilty of experiencing the feeling of regret. Regret from saying no to taking risks and letting fear take the lead. Now I say yes to every opportunity that comes my way, and when fear tries to take over I take the risk anyways. I ask myself am I anxious or excited? The feelings are so similar and I encourage everyone to lean into that excitement, and take the risk. Read more>>

I believe that I was always born with the innate pull to take risks because I always had this inner knowing that life is meant to be lived. My biggest fear has always been getting to the end of my life and feeling like I didn’t accomplish what I wanted to accomplish and that has been my biggest motivator. Read more>>

Taking risks is something that everyone will react to and face differently. Personally, I developed my mentality for facing all risks during the past twelve years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training. Put simply, “life is movement.” When someone twice your size is bearing down on you with all of their weight, crushing the air out of you, and grabbing at whatever arm, leg, finger, or wrist they can reach, the only guarantee you have is that if you sit still, you will lose. When I was considering leaving my corporate job, I had a business coach tell me, “Instead of thinking about the worst thing that could happen, think about the BEST thing that could happen.” That perspective shift is what gave me the courage to put in my two weeks’ notice at my 9-5 and take the risk. I find that at some point, especially when it comes to career, the word “risk” and the very meaning of that word can be the only right decision. Take a risk. In essence, I try not to associate the word risk with something “negative”, but rather I want to experience it as a word that promises an exclusive way to success, i.e. a change for the better. That’s my decision. Read more>>

For me, I have always been excited to jump into the unknown. I came from a relatively unique upbringing and would be considered different early on, so the part of risk that involves drawing attention to yourself never really affected me. A great example of something that assisted in my ability to take risk was deciding to be a foreign exchange student when I was 17. Things weren’t great at the homestead and I had to get out. Honestly FEAR . It got to a point for me even when I’m fighting my battles and I’m thinking trying to find clarity or an answer to something I went through in life I’m like “Would you have done this if you weren’t scared/nervous? “ Probably but probably not. Fear definitely pushed the envelope for me to take risks because I feel the best comes out ,It’s either Pass or Fail. All or Nothing! Read more>>

After college I worked as an embryologist for 13 years. When our 4th child was born we decided it would be best if I stayed home, It was a very hard decision, but looking back it was a decision that would play a huge role in where I am today. I knew that we couldn’t make it on one income with 4 kids so I started an Etsy shop knowing nothing about starting my own business. Read more>>

If we are being honest, very few people in my life would describe me as a risk taker. In fact, my mom would go so far as to tell you about how I brought an extra twelve-pack of pencils to my ACT exam, just in case. And my husband would get laughs describing the excess number of snacks that are stashed in the bottom of backpacks, diaper bags, and car consoles, because no one wants to be caught empty handed when my children decide they’re hungry. Central to my willingness to take risks is the acknowledgment that every decision, whether in life or business, carries inherent risks. NOT making a choice, is a choice. NOT taking that leap of faith is a leap in and of itself. Whether it’s choosing to stay with a company or pursuing new opportunities, there’s always level of uncertainty involved. Read more>>

As a child my mom put me in a lot of clubs and sports. Some I was familiar with and others where I had to learn how they worked. With those moments it made me fearless to be able to do anything in life, even if I never experienced it before. As I’ve gotten older that mentality has spilled into my business endeavours. Throughout the years in the retail and wholesale industry I have had big successes and some failures. Failures are necessary in order to develop and learn, and to discover that taking risks is important if you want to grow as an entrepreneur. When I left the corporate world and started my own company, I knew not only was I taking a risk, but I wanted to do it differently than what existed in the industry. Read more>>

it’s still something that I’m continuing to work on. As an actor and performer, it’s kind of a given that you have to take risks often and step outside of your comfort zone, but sometimes that is a bit difficult for me. Even so, I just have to trust my talents and digging deep and know that, if this is something that I truly love, then, sometimes I have to do what scares me in order to achieve my goal, or become a certain character. When I think of how I developed the ability to take a risk, it really boils down to one irrefutable answer, and that is God. Over the years, as I have grown deeper in my relationship with Christ, it has shown me that following him and choosing a life that allows him to be in control is a risk in itself. You don’t know where it will lead you or what’s on the other side, but you believe that it’s worth it. Read more>>

Taking risks, for me, is an art and a science, cultivated through years -both personally and professionally – of pushing boundaries, facing fears head-on, and embracing the unknown. My journey in developing this ability wasn’t overnight; it was a series of steps, some smaller, some larger, all of which taught me the intricate dance between risk and reward. Read more>>

Embarking on a journey of risk-taking and self-discovery, I found an unparalleled mentor in Tony Hsieh, the visionary CEO of Zappos, through his seminal book “Delivering Happiness”, let alone the fact that I worked for him at Zappos.com. Tony’s candid recounting of his entrepreneurial ventures and the philosophy of fostering happiness as a business model profoundly reshaped my approach to risk. Read more>>

I developed my ability to take risks by simply taking the plunge and putting myself out there. The first step – deciding to actually take the risk – is by far the hardest. When deciding to start my live virtual Q&A series, Picturehouse 441, with my business partner, I knew there were many risks involved including whether or not any filmmakers would be willing to join this public-facing series (my last one was private) and whether or not anyone would pay the admission price to attend.
