Isai Rodriguez of McKinney Tx on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Isai Rodriguez and have shared our conversation below.

Isai, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
“I love the walks with my kids. We take a 30-minute to one-hour walk from home to the park and back. It gives us a chance to talk about the things we like and don’t like, and it’s a simple way to bond. Sometimes we don’t even need to talk — we just enjoy being together.”

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
“I’m Isai Rodriguez, a Mexican-American drummer and guitar player from North Dallas. I’ve been part of a few bands, and I’ve enjoyed my time with every single one of them. My current band, AVAE, is made up of incredibly talented people that I’m grateful to share the stage with.”

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
“In my point of view, the bond breaks when we insult or disrespect each other. The only way to restore it is to accept people as they are and treat them accordingly. We don’t have to be friends with everyone, but we should respect each person as an individual and do our best to live fairly together.”

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
“Yes, I’ve had moments where I made mistakes and ended up dealing with depression and anxiety. I had never experienced anything like that before, and going through it has made me stronger and more aware of myself. I can say the feeling is still present today, but every day I’m learning how to manage it.”

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
“I would say yes. I mostly post about my drumming or guitar playing on my social media. This is usually how I play when I’m live, and I try to be the same guy who genuinely enjoys the moment while doing it.”

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was real — not a ‘perfect’ guy, but someone who always tried to be happy and share that happiness with others. I love when people see me and smile. I’m not a quiet person, so I know I can make mistakes, but I’m also someone who is willing to ask for forgiveness when I mess up.
