We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jacquelyn Buell. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Jacquelyn, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
As a business owner, it’s easy to get into the nitty gritty details of project management and client work, but the hardest part of running a business is everything that goes on BEHIND the scenes.
I’m most proud of building my confidence as a business owner over the last six years and the resilience that has come with it.
It’s easy to fall down, and get discouraged. It’s harder to get back up, dust yourself off and try again. That’s exactly what owning a business has helped me do and it has brought immense confidence alongside it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jacquelyn and I am a graphic designer of over 10 years. I have owned my business, Kind By Design NYC, for six years and we are a unique agency because we focus on kindness and giving back to the community.
Not only do we treat our clients like family, but we guide them to where they are going. Through building strong branding foundations, we set them up for success before their brands ever go live. We know what it takes to run a business, so we help entrepreneurs through every step of the way. From visual branding, to tone of voice, websites, building email lists, creating lead magnets, all the way to social media, lead generation, engagement and building real communities, we are there every step of the way.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that has served its purpose and must now be released is my need to please everyone. It had its place in my life, but the more I grow as a business owner, the more I have accepted that it is okay to have boundaries. It is impossible to please everyone or to place them into a “one size fits all” package. That part of me no longer serves myself or anyone else around me. It has been released and although my goal is to serve every client, I no longer bend over backwards with everything I do. I stand firm in what works, and if that does not align with the person, that is okay!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
It’s okay to fail. If you are afraid of failing, you will never learn nor will you take big risks. You just have to remember to get back up and try again.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. I am quirky and fun, and I’m also not everyone’s cup of tea. The people that understand me are my people and that’s all that matters. I no longer hide behind full professionalism because although it’s important to show people that you can hold your own and be professional, it’s also important to show them that you are kind and funny and real.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
We are only here for connections and people. The little moments are everything and literally nothing else in this world matters.
