Jeehan Quijano discusses Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill

We’re excited to chat with Jeehan Quijano about Dept. of Speculation. Check out our conversation below.

Jeehan, it’s so good to be connecting again, this time to discuss one of your favorite books. So – let’s jump right in, can you tell us about Dept. of Speculation – what should our readers know about this book?
It is essentially a love story. It showcases the stages of a relationship, from the blossoming new phase, then dating, then marriage, and then parenthood. It is a rumination about intimacy, trust, motherhood, and unrealized ambitions.

Great, so maybe you can get into a bit more detail about why this book feels relevant to you and perhaps you can touch on any lessons or insights that resonated with you?
The story reminds us that no relationship is perfect because we are human beings, and therefore we all make mistakes, grow, change and evolve. And even the ones that are rooted in love and respect for each other face challenges, and to resolve these may need understanding, forgiveness, space and time for self-reflection and being true to the values that resonate with you the most.

What themes stood out to you most and were there any perspectives or insights that you felt have helped you expand your worldview?
Relationships involve sacrifice, acceptance and a lot of learning and discovering along the way – discovering about ourselves and our loved ones, about the things that matter most to us and what we are willing to fight and stand for.

How did you discover this book?
