Jenice Owens of Dallas on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jenice Owens. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Jenice, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Before I do anything I take a moment to thank God for another day. Make time for prayer and cultivate a habit of thankfulness to set the tone for my day. I love sitting in silence to collect my thoughts with a cup of tea and loving on my son when he wakes up.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jenice Owens and I am a creative in every single sense of the word. I am a person who always has so many ideas and aspirations, that I tend to wonder how I will execute them in this lifetime. One idea was the concept of my first published children’s book titled “Coco Brown”. This story highlights a young girls journey to self discovery all while loving herself and others.

Once I seen how faith and determination can bring ideas to life, I ventured into creating a brand where individuals , from all walks of life, can express their truths through creativity, style and storytelling. Ihvastry (pronounced I-vas-tree) is short for I have a story. I believe that everyone has a story and the trajectory of someone’s life can be changed in a positive way by it being shared to who is meant to listen,

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
While on a journey towards great transformation, I have learned that the anxious me is no longer needed. Being anxious was almost like a gift and a curse for me. The anxious part of me fueled the ambitious part of me if that makes sense. I know that If I allowed myself to wait on anyone or anything, then I would be probably waiting forever with no progress. However, I understand how being anxious interfered with trusting the process and allowing things to flow into its natural state. I had to relinquish the control I thought I had and surrender to God because I know he knows the plans he has for me. That’s to give me a hope and an expected end. I have shedded that anxiousness and evolved into a place of peace.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
While in the pursuit of making my dreams a reality, there were many times where I almost gave up. I still struggle with each step but I know that eventually I will get to my destination. So now I trust the journey and I will be glad that I kept going. Many people give up right before the breakthrough and I just refuse to allow myself to quit.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My peace. When I am in a peaceful place I am allowed to operate from my heart without the lense of chaos and frustration. I am a better mother, a better friend and an overall better person when I am at peace. So I protect it at all costs.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I understand that some people were raised on survival and not love. So when genuine love does visit, it’s hard to understand. Even harder to accept. Keeping this in mind I had to realize that some want to desperately love but may not know how to.
