Jim Brewer on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Jim Brewer shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Jim, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I’m someplace like Dallas Divide near Telluride, Colorado in the fall with the aspens at their peak. I can spend hours photographing two or three scenes and completely lose track of time. The beauty of God’s creation never ceases to amaze me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jim Brewer. I am a freelance photographer living in Bentonville, Arkansas. Photography has been my passion since I got my first camera in grade school and through the years, I’ve been fortunate to turn that passion into a successful career. For many years I served as director of media services at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, chronicling in words and photos the people and events of a university I love. Since relocating to northwest Arkansas, I have shot everything from family and individual portraits to special events, sports and landscapes as primarily a hobby. I have also taught classes in photojournalism and sports media at the University of Arkansas School of Journalism and Strategic Media.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My Dad was a great example of what it means to work hard and always do your best, even when the task you’re trying to complete isn’t necessarily a pleasant one. As I always told the people who worked for me through the years, sometimes you have to do the mundane stuff so you can do the stuff you really like.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I guess I was blessed to grow up with loving, Christian parents who always took the time to listen when I was struggling or when I was happy. Didn’t matter. I am doubly blessed to be married to a wonderful woman who has always been there for me, is never judgmental and never leaves any doubt that she loves me.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
First, my belief and faith in Jesus Christ, second my family and friends. Everything else is details!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was a good father, a good husband, and a great grandfather.
