JoDo shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi JoDo , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me these days is I wake up (usually to my dog) wanting food so I’ll get up make his bowl and then start my wife’s coffee. I am a new dad these days so I’ll get her the coffee let her feed and then we usually hang out for a few minutes with the baby. After that my mom will watch the baby for a little bit so we can both shower fast, get dressed and then plan out our day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
So my name is Joe most people know me as “JoDo” I’m a music artist from Rochester, NY. I’ve been making music and doing music seriously for about a decade. I started in high school and did my first show my senior year. Since then I’ve traveled all around the country try doing shows and festivals and opening up for a lot of big name artists. I’ve been involved with music my whole life since I was very very young and fell in love with song writing very early on. Since then I kinda always knew I wanted to just make music because making music doesn’t just make me happy it makes other people happy too. So since I met my wife and had our child I’ve taken a small break from music to focus on my relationship and my son. I have a bunch of stuff in the archive that I can’t wait to release. I’m hoping to be able to drop my first officially radio hit single “Stuck in my head” by the end of the year!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I feel what can make and break a bond between two people are misunderstandings, lack of communication or not being able to properly communicate. Those work hand and hand when it comes to a bond. Sometimes I even think some bonds are meant to be broken but not all for bad reasons. Sometimes you gotta let go, sometimes things will find their way back and other times it could just be a lesson. Communication in any aspect of any relationship is a key part to understanding and resolving problems. If you can’t properly communicate what is upsetting you without screaming, punching or yelling then chances are you have a lot of bonds that have been broken. With communication and proper communication at that you can solve most problems with people if you really just sit down and talk.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has showed me that people are only around for the prizes. Everybody wants to be a part of your success story but they never mention any part of being there through the heartaches, financial loss, death and it can go on and on and on. On the other side of the coin that suffering can also reveal who has been in your corner and who has not. Suffering builds character, it builds drive and creates motivation because who wants to suffer? If you are born and success and have never “suffered” then in my eyes you truly can’t appreciate the success because that’s all you know. Hard times build character and great times build memories.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
In a sense yes, in a sense no. To me that’s another two headed coin question. On one side you have my core beliefs, personality, how I carry myself and my goals. Those never go away now on the other side you have the “artist imagine” which you have to maintain and i would definitely say when “JoDo” arrives he’s alot more outgoing and energetic and really brings a lot of personality to the table. Now Joe is a very introverted person who likes to stay inside with his family and dog and just work. It’s funny because when I’m in the studio it’s like I have to be two people at once. I think there are two versions of everyone and they both carry different characteristics of their own but deep down who they are never changes, id say it’s more of the image that changes instead of the person.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most peace when it’s gently raining and I’m in my car driving listening to music. I’m not sure what it is about that specifically but it’s so calming and just helps me relax and open my mind.
