Kate Bergeron shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Kate, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Trees! I just did a road trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and hugged every ancient tree I was allowed to touch. (I blew kisses to the ones with fences around em.)
I’ve been making more of an effort over the past few years to expose myself to more regular hits of awe, and let me tell you, Mother Nature is an excellent dealer.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Kate Bergeron, a Multi-Hyphenate Creative and Educator. My main art is acting with credits on ABC, AMC, Prime, and Nickelodeon, as well as in film, theater, and voiceover.
Between acting jobs I… well, I juggle the other half of my career! I sing, produce, make people laugh on Instagram, teach, coach, and write (award-winning screenwriter and winner of “best pitch” for my TV pilot at AFMX),
Yo-ho, yo–ho, the artist’s life for me!
I’ll be serving on my union’s board for the next 2 years, and I’m excited to put my education background to use on the committee I’m chairing. I’m revving up to teach a new class in October, am acting in a film in October, and am in pre-production on a short I’m producing that shoots in early 2026.
Many joyful projects!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Let me tell you a story.
When I was in high school, I got in a fight with my parents, but I don’t remember what about. But it was something about a thing I wanted to do that was different from other kids around me.
I remember yelling in my parent’s face, in my righteous teenage howl, “I don’t care what other people think!” And my parent howled back in their exasperated parent voice, “Well, you should!”
And I remember being shook by that.
Wait… I should? I thought being my own person was THE GOAL.
Huh. Ok, time to rethink this.
Nine months later, I’m in my first year at acting conservatory. I have a check-in with a teacher, a time to evaluate how things are going. I sit down across from her, so eager. With wide eyes and my heart in my hand, I ask her, “How can I improve?”
Her response?
“You need to stop caring what other people think.”
WTF? Who’s right?
So, believing that any one person has all the answers- that one person knows what’s right for me? Yeah, I release that. I take what works for me and ditch what doesn’t.
Life is one giant cheese platter, baby! And a creative career, even more so.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I married my husband because he was such a good listener. That sounds glib, but it’s the truth!
We’d been in this wild band together for years and hadn’t hung out socially outside of band practice – though we were definitely the “mom and dad” of the band, keeping everyone pointed in the right direction.
I was going through a terrible breakup, really messy, really painful. It felt to him that he was the only one in the band who hadn’t reached out to support me (not true).
We met up for a coffee after work and he just… listened. He looked me right in the eye in this way that made me feel so seen and cared for. It made me sit up and take notice. And it made me look at him differently.
Aaaaaaand eventually marry him. Ha! See the power of being a good listener?
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Well, that depends on whether you believe what you see, or if you believe what I say!
Because in truth, I am an introvert. People find it hard to believe that an actor can be an introvert but it’s not as uncommon as you might think.
So much of this career is public-facing, requiring showing up and being “on”. But that is a learned skill. I show up to events and lead when called on to do so, because I care about people, about my fellow creatives, very much.
But I recharge best alone. After an event, I need time to recover. I need my alone time to be able to do those things. It’s like eating my veggies, a non-negotiable for my health.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I have always been a pretty efficient person. I failed at office culture because I’d finish my work and realize that everyone else had been wandering to each others desks sharing Facebook memes.
But there is no one who understands the value of time quite like a parent of young kids.
Since becoming a parent, I have become superhero level at time blocking, prioritization, and flexibility. I plan, I set timers, and I adapt better than most.
