We recently had the chance to connect with Katie Hughes and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Katie, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Taking time for myself is what helps me lose track of time and find myself again. For instance, I enjoy relaxing at home with my cat, decompressing, and scrolling through social media, especially after a long work week. I also like to hang out with my friends, go thrifting, and visit local coffee shops.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Katie! I am 30 years old and from Birmingham, Alabama. I am a Master hairstylist at Ulta beauty. What makes my work interesting is that I like to stand out from others. I like to be different! I also love to post my work on my socials and make TikTok’s and Instagram Reels. What makes me unique is my sparkly Dyson I bedazzled! All my clients love it and it gets everyone’s attention. I feel like that is my brand!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
Both my parents are probably the ones who tough me the most about work! They are the hardest working people I know! They are the reason why I work so hard and why I have a good worth ethic.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
As a child when I was sad or scared what helped me the most is playing with my dolls and fixing their hair and also drawing and doing art. And also watching a movie. I would lock myself in my pink bedroom and watch my favorite movie at the time The Wizard of Oz.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say what really matters to me is personal growth, being authentic, and also being loyal, supportive, empathetic and reliable. Even on my days where I’m not 100%.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I 100% believe I am doing what I was born to do! I remember when I was a kid I always wanted to play and cut hair. I also used to play salon and play with my mom’s hair as well (except the cutting part)! And in school I had to put together a PowerPoint on what occupation I wanted to do once I graduated and of course it was cosmetology. There have always been signs my whole life hahah!
