Katie Smetherman Holmes discusses The Scythe Series by Neal Shusterman

We’re excited to chat with Katie Smetherman Holmes about The Scythe Series. Check out our conversation below.

Katie, thanks for joining us again, we really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and insights about The Scythe Series. Let’s start with a quick summary to bring everyone up to speed.
A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so in order to keep the size of the population under control.

In this future world, natural death is a thing of the past. The Internet is an all-powerful sentient being called the Thunderhead, and all knowledge has been acquired. There is nothing left to learn. People have nanites in their blood that heal them and mask pain and if they do die, they can be revived quickly and painlessly. However, in order to solve population issues in this utopia, appointed “scythes” perform random gleanings – true deaths from which one cannot be revived.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Wonderful, so can you talk to us in more detail about why this book resonates with you?
This book series is an incredible read. I absolutely love it and am about to finish the third book. I love the way that this book captures so many different personalities and types of people, how they question or keep their humanity, and how to work with others.

Were there any twists or surprises that caught you off guard?
Oh yes. At the end of both book one and two there were some amazing twists that I seriously was not anticipating. because of those endings, I immediately started reading the next book in the trilogy.

How did you discover this book?
My husband read the entire trilogy and said it quickly jumped up to one of his favorite series. So I read it after he finished. And I can see why he loved the book. I’m about to finish the last book and it has been excellently written and so captivating.
