We recently had the chance to connect with kay kenny and have shared our conversation below.
kay, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have a new dog who is not only a very sweet animal but incredibly funny and smart.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a fine arts photographer, painter, and writer. I have been incorporating narrative text into my artwork for as long as I have made art. Recently I began to write short fiction which is very connected to the stories I would include as titles to my artwork. I have also begun to return to earlier work styles that use a mix of photographic images and drawing/painting on watercolor paper. The writing is distinctly different from the visual work although both are connected to story telling and often surreal in approach.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As s child I though I could be independent of outside forces. I could choose and live the life I desired immune to the powers around me, the nature that surrounds us and the wishes of others who imposed themselves in my private thoughts. Life was a matte of simple and direct actions. Childhood is a slow process of the erosion of dreams. Adulthood breaks the dam.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Being an artist is full of rejection- there are so many moments when I thought i was ready to give up but the desire, the overwhelming desire to communicate these ideas that spin through my dreams is too overwhelming, so I preserver.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The art world builds on novelty. Novelty does not reflect truth, the passing fad is not what captures the future
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
nothing except shopping for things

This series of images are part of 12 images that are a story about a girl on the edge of becoming a woman. The series include text and are created from photographs in the early photographic process gum bichromate on watercolor paper. This early photographic process sensitizes watercolors to light and requires spreading a handmade emulsion on the paper. They are unique images. I wrote and created all of the images. The series is called “Dreamland Speaks When Shadows Walk”.
