Kim B Miller shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kim, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I definitely feel like I’m walking on my path with purpose, each step grounded in faith. My journey isn’t always easy, and the road hasn’t always been straight, but I’m not walking it alone. I move forward with the guidance of Jesus.
His presence reminds me of who I am. There’s clarity in knowing my path isn’t random. I don’t wonder if I’m on the right path. I know I am.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a dynamic, multi-disciplinary performing artist who offers a range of creative and professional services:
• Spoken Word Performances: Delivers impactful poetry
• Event Hosting & Emceeing: A charismatic emcee
• Keynote Speaking & Panelist: Known for her engaging presence
• Workshops & Facilitation: Leads interactive workshops
• Author & Literary Services: I offer readings, poetry commissions, and literary collaborations
I delivered my first TEDx Talk in May 2025 titled 17 Syllables To Stop The Blame Game.
I was the keynote speaker at Northern Virginia Community College, for their S.E.AL. Awards in April 2025 and
at Rochester Institute of Technology (New York) Saunders School of Business in March 2025 for the 5th Annual Women’s Leadership Summit.
I was the recipient of the 2023 Vivien H. Hansbury Award for Trailblazing a Path for Women in the Creative Arts. I am also the Poet Laureate Emerita of Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park, Virginia, the first and only African American to hold the title in that region.
I was named InsideNoVa’s 2025 Best of Prince William Author of the Year and I was awarded DMV Renaissance Awards Haikuist of the Year for 2023, 2022, and 2021.
I am also an experienced and personable host and facilitator.
I am the author of 5 books.
I teach parenting and teen-focused classes that cover self-awareness, anger management, and building a cohesive family life.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was young, I initially believed that anything to do with writing wasn’t for me. I didn’t begin my journey with a love for writing. In fact, I struggled with spelling, didn’t enjoy English, and had no experience with poetry or public speaking. My strengths were in math and logic, and words never felt like my comfort zone. But despite those early challenges, I transformed into an award-winning poet, impactful speaker, energetic facilitator and an inspiring host.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could whisper one kindness to my younger self, it would be this: Don’t compare yourself to others. Your path is uniquely yours. Just because someone else found success a certain way that doesn’t mean that’s the road you’re meant to take. You’re not here to be “a copy”. You’re here to be an original.”
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that I hold being real and truthfulness close to my heart. I value people who show up as they are, without masks or pretense. Honesty, even when it’s uncomfortable, matters more to me than polished words or perfect appearances. I believe that genuine connection can only grow from a place of truth.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the deepest peace when I’m talking to God. In those quiet moments, when it’s just me and Him, I feel truly seen and heard. There’s a comfort in knowing that He understands me completely: every flaw, every sin, every part of who I am and still chooses to love me. That kind of grace is almost impossible for me to grasp. I feel like He never stops smiling at me.
