K’nek of Hollywood, FL on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with K’nek and have shared our conversation below.

K’nek, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Honestly, I feel like God is calling me to perform more, and for me it’s not just about the music—it’s about the testimonies I get to share on stage. A lot of my songs reflect my life experiences, but when I actually talk about how God came through for me, that’s what really seems to stick with people. It gives them something to think about beyond the music. The only thing is, performing used to be a huge challenge for me. I was honestly terrified of it. But I’ve been putting in the work, and little by little, I can feel myself getting better and more confident on stage.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well, my name is K’nek, and I’ve worn a lot of hats over the years. But right now, I’m living out my purpose as a full-time Christian hip-hop artist. Honestly, I’m still kind of blown away by how quickly things have been moving with my career. It’s something I’m still processing. At the end of the day though, I’m just someone who really loves helping people. That’s what led me to start sharing music industry tips on YouTube a couple years back. I never imagined it would grow the way it has, but I’m grateful—not just for my own journey in music, but for the chance to help others grow in theirs too.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Man, I’d have to give that credit to my childhood friend, Daniel Fequiere. He had a huge impact on me because he was the one who really showed me what it meant to live Christ-like. Now, don’t get me wrong—we both got into plenty of trouble as kids—but he was always trying to do the right thing, and I really admired that. Over time, it rubbed off on me and shaped who I became. My mom was Catholic, but I didn’t truly understand what it meant to be Christian until I met him. And now here I am doing Christian hip-hop. Funny how God works, right?

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. I actually stepped away from music for about six years. What most people don’t know is that my first run in music was with a Christian hip-hop group. We had so much potential, but life hit us all in different ways and eventually we disbanded. After that, I dove into the workforce and, for a while, I let my passion for music die. But like most true passions, it eventually found its way back to me. Even though I was making good money, I wasn’t happy because my real passion was still buried under disappointment. Thankfully, with the help of some destiny helpers, and through prayer and fasting, I found my way back home to music. And now I’m never leaving.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the biggest lie the music industry tells itself is that you can’t have a real music career without a record label backing you. The funny thing is, there’s plenty of proof that shows otherwise. There are a lot of artists building successful careers independently. What’s even more interesting is that every major record label out there started as an independent label at some point. I like to think of myself as living proof that being an independent artist can absolutely be fruitful.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
In the booth. The booth is like my sanctuary. No matter what’s going on in my life, no matter how chaotic the world gets, I can always find my peace in there. Those four little insulated walls just put me at ease every time. Once I’m inside, the only thing I have to focus on is how I want to deliver my bars.
