We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kristine Ray. Check out our conversation below.
Kristine, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
There are quite a few unethical and fraudulent rescues so we always attempt to be as transparent as possible. We spend a lot of time tracking down vets and trainers who are knowledgeable but also able to work within a reasonable budget so that we do not waste donations.. None of us get paid to run this rescue – it is 100% volunteer driven.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I moved with my family from Asia to Houston in 2015 and quickly became involved in rescue after seeing the dire need for help in TX.
I have been one of the lead volunteers with Mile High Labrador Retriever Mission since 2017. The rescue was founded in CO in 2009 and we have saved many thousands of dogs since then. Most dogs come from Texas but we also pull from OK, CO, KS, AL and NM.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before going into rescue I worked in banking, internal audit and consulting. I loved it and it was a very difficult choice to give it all up for an international move.
While I miss the work and especially the people, I am very grateful that I am now able to spend my days working with non profits such has Mile High.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
I am always looking for opportunities to grow and to change my mind. I am not always successful but strive to listen to other people’s viewpoints without being defensive and rude.
In today’s world many people seem to lack the willingness to even consider that they might not always be correct or that it is actually a positive that people have differing viewpoints. I love a good respectful discussion!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Lots of smart (and not so smart) people assume they have all the answers. Be open to new ideas, have friends with viewpoints that differ from yours, and don’t worry so much about what other people do if it doesn’t impact you.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My family and that would be enough.
