Leslie Bennett of Summerville on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Leslie Bennett shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Leslie, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A lot of people assume social media is just about making a post and hitting publish. That’s actually only a small part of it. What we do involves strategy, planning, data, timing, and constant adjusting happening behind the scenes.

And while being good at graphics, photos, or reels definitely helps, it doesn’t automatically mean someone can manage or grow a brand online. The work is much more involved than most people realize.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the co-founder of Digital Pulse Consulting, a social media strategy and management agency that helps brands actually use social media with purpose. We work with businesses that want clarity, consistency, and content that makes sense for their goals, not just whatever trend is popular that week.

Before running an agency, we were on the client side ourselves, using social media to sell products and grow businesses. That experience shapes everything we do now.

What makes us different is our focus on the human side of social media. We help bring business owners and teams into their content so their audience can connect with a real person, not just a brand. Social media works best when it feels authentic, and that’s always been at the center of what we do.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught me the most about work. He’s always had a strong work ethic and took pride in doing things the right way. He held down two jobs for years and later ran his own business, often putting in long hours without complaint. Seeing that firsthand definitely influenced how I work today. I show up, work hard, and always do my best, even when no one’s watching.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No, I’m stubborn and giving up isn’t something I accept. There’s always a way around things.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
There are a lot of misconceptions in this industry, but two of the biggest ones are that going viral is the goal and that more followers automatically mean more success.

Platforms like Instagram are actually starting to put less emphasis on follower count, and much more on how people actually interact with content. Things like views, shares, saves, and comments are going to be much more important. A smaller, engaged audience will almost always outperform a large, disconnected one.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Definitely what I was born to do. I’ve never done well taking orders or having someone tell me how to handle a situation, when I’m allowed to take a lunch break or a day off, or what to do. Even as a teenager I didn’t plan out a wedding like most girls. I wanted a career and to travel. Now I’m blessed enough to be my own boss, and traveling is part of my job!
