Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with abbey soucy of Horry County

We’re looking forward to introducing you to abbey soucy. Check out our conversation below.

abbey, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I never used to feel comfortable speaking in front of people, but volunteering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention walks helped me push past that fear. Over time, sharing my story and connecting with others at these events gave me the confidence to speak publicly.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Abbey Soucy, Walk Chair for the Myrtle Beach Out of the Darkness Community Walk with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. After losing my best friend to suicide in 2019, I got involved to honor her and help others find hope and healing. Our walk brings people together to remember loved ones, support mental health, and raise funds for suicide prevention resources here in South Carolina.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The chapter of leading as a way to honor my friend and heal my own heart has fulfilled its purpose. After six years with suicide prevention and four as Walk Chair, I’m ready to pass the torch and support from the sidelines.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain the moment I chose to honor my friend by helping others. Sharing my story through suicide prevention work turned grief into strength and gave my pain a voice that could help heal others.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m deeply committed to creating a world where mental health is openly talked about and suicide is preventable. It’s a lifelong mission to turn awareness into action and make sure no one feels alone in their struggles.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who used her story to help others find hope, who loved deeply, and who never stopped showing up for her community.
