We recently had the chance to connect with Carl Elixir and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carl, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Creating and editing a beautiful masterpiece of work. I could spend hours on a single photo, repeatly perfecting it over and over again, just so that my own eyes approve it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Carl, the owner and lead photographer at the Carl Elixir Studio. We have been in business for over 12 years, and we offer both photo and video services to all couples in the DMV region. Unlike most modern day digital photos, our work is unique in a sense that it has the weight and color of an oil painting. The drama that’s conveyed through our work makes them truly classic and timeless. We get to know our couples long before the wedding, learn about their personalities, hobbies and personal stories. These information help us understand the subject that we are working with, preparing us for the truly magical moment that will eventually reveal itself on the wedding day. We never fixate ourselves to a shot list, as a true artist never copies off another painting, we use our knowledge, experience and intuition to come up with some of the coolest and most exciting ideas.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was actually a scientist/engineer, learning the logical way, working a 9-5 job.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Buy the dip!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
50/50 I guess. The real me is a more introvert and quiet person. But having to work in the wedding industry, sometimes it’s inevitable to be a bit louder and more extravert. In my leisure time I like to play piano and guitar, building lego with my son, they provide a good balance to my crazy wedding weekends.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Born to do.
