Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Cat Willett of Brooklyn

Cat Willett shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Cat, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Spending time with my toddler son, and watching him grow, brings me joy and fuels my creative energy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I make illustrated comics about parenting, motherhood, gender, and animals, and am a regular contributor to the Washington Post and Vox. I also love to work with brands to make retro-inspired artwork that uplifts others through bold, vibrant imagery. My comics channel personal experiences with pregnancy and postpartum, as well as other topics like politics, travel, and animals.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was an unapologetic weirdo who would rather make something with my hands than fit in, and I think I’m still that person when you peel the layers back.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me that both community and self-perseverance are equally important. At the end of the day, we have only ourselves to answer to, but connecting with the people we love is one of the purest joys in life, and will help us through difficult times.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Patti Smith, because she has seemingly never sacrificed her vision or her beliefs for money or fame.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
At night, when I’m reading in bed.
