We recently had the chance to connect with Charles Drawin and have shared our conversation below.
Charles, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Washing the dishes, dont get me wrong, i love a good plate, soap and waterfalls but when i get to the point of reaching out to the cutlery it all becomes blurry and i feel like a grain of sand lost in the vastness of the universe.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello there, my name is Carlos Lezama McCarthy AKA Charles Drawin and im a professional football freestyle illustrator, I´ve been doing this for living for almost ten years and i should say it is a very wild trip! I never thought of football as a way for artistic expression but it is such an amazing meeting point between people and passion.
Im so grateful i managed (or still trying, sort of) to do what i love and get compensated for it, and Im not just talking about money but also the kindness and admiration from football fans.
About my goals and dreams i think i dont have such a long distance sight, i normally only hope that my next piece of artwork would be better that the one before and that i get to know something new on the process.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Back in the day when i was still at university i made some football illustrations for a Mexican sports newspaper, i didnt win but still i got offered a job and i thought, oh maybe this is actually something i could do for living! Sadly the job was quite far away and i was still at school so i just had to forget about it.
More than ten years passed and my studies and work went on a different path and i think i wasnt even aware that the feeling and the desire stayed in me and life was just setting up the table and giving me all the tools for what was coming ahead.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Take more risks and try to speak up more for myself, i dont think i regret many decisions but i never liked the feeling of asking myself what if? so many times instead of doing things
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I always thought that people get to a point in life when they would have to worry about much but now i realize that even picking up what youre going to have for breakfast could cause you a headache!
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Im not 100 percent sure im doing what i was born to do but it at least bring me joy
