Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Charne Rollins of Garden City

Charne Rollins shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Charne , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
The most surprising thing I’ve learned is how deeply customers rely on my products for emotional wellness. I always knew aromatherapy could support stress relief and relaxation, but I didn’t realize how many people were using my room sprays and candles as part of their nightly routines to cope with insomnia, anxiety, or emotional overload. Over and over, customers told me they weren’t just buying a scent — they were buying a moment of peace.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Charné Rollins, and I’m a registered nurse and the founder of Bed of Roses Naturals — a clean aromatherapy brand rooted in wellness, intentional formulation, and emotional balance. I started the brand during a period of intense stress and insomnia while working night shifts in the ICU. As a survivor with heightened sensitivity to fragrance and environmental triggers, I became increasingly aware of how many home-scent products were filled with irritants, endocrine disruptors, and ingredients that worked against the very wellness people were trying to cultivate.

With my clinical background and firsthand understanding of stress physiology — cortisol dysregulation, sleep disruption, and sensory overload — I began developing clean, non-toxic formulations designed to support relaxation, grounding, and mood regulation. What started as a personal need evolved into a wellness-forward fragrance brand that helps people create calm, regulate their nervous system, and feel at home in their own space.

Today, I’m expanding Bed of Roses Naturals through Hofstra University’s Entrepreneurship & Innovation Accelerator, strengthening my formulations, refining production, and preparing to scale into retail and subscription-based aromatherapy. My mission remains simple: to create intentional, science-informed fragrance experiences that elevate emotional wellness and help people breathe a little easier.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
When I started Bed of Roses Naturals, one of my earliest candles was called Pillow Talk, because it represented intentional connection — the kind that happens when two people slow down, put their phones away, and really communicate. That candle became symbolic of intimacy, emotional presence, and creating space to reconnect.

So, what breaks bonds between people is disconnection — the lack of communication, emotional shutdown, stress, and everyday distractions that pull people away from each other.
And what restores them is intentionality choosing to be present, choosing to talk, choosing to listen, and creating an environment that allows honesty and real conversation to happen again.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I’ve learned that failure is not rejection, it’s redirection. What’s meant for me will always align in divine timing, not my timing.

In business, I used to take setbacks personally — a slow sales month, a denied opportunity, or a product that didn’t move the way I expected. But Bed of Roses showed me that every “no” pushed me toward something better. A product I once thought failed simply needed a new container, a new name, or a new audience. A vending event that didn’t do well taught me how to choose better markets. Every misstep refined my strategy.

Now, I see failure as feedback. It’s information, not identity. And it always leads me toward the next elevation.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the home fragrance industry is the idea that ingredients don’t matter — that what you burn in your home has no impact on your air quality, your mood, your sleep, or your overall wellbeing. Consumers are encouraged to focus on the scent or the pretty packaging, while the actual formulation gets ignored. But as a nurse, a survivor, and someone with real sensitivity to fragrance and environmental triggers, I know firsthand that the ingredients absolutely do matter.

Most people don’t realize how many mass-produced candles contain irritants, synthetic additives, and endocrine-disturbing chemicals that can trigger headaches, disrupt sleep, increase inflammation, and affect mood. The industry’s unspoken message is: “If it smells good, it’s fine.” But scent should never compromise your health.

At Bed of Roses Naturals, our products are formulated with intention, transparency, and clean ingredients from start to finish. Every fragrance is designed to support emotional wellbeing — reducing stress, promoting better sleep, grounding your nervous system, and creating a soothing environment for you and your family. When customers buy from us, they’re not just buying a candle or a spray. They’re buying peace of mind, safer ingredients, and a sensory experience rooted in wellness, not shortcuts.

Your home environment matters. Your air quality matters. Your nervous system matters. And what you burn, breathe, and surround yourself with should support your wellbeing — not work against it.
Luxury you can breathe in — Bed of Roses Naturals.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m near the water, especially in the tropics. There’s something about the warm air, the sunlight, and that ocean energy that instantly centers me. I also find peace in my creative element — when I’m making candles or room sprays, listening to music, and letting myself move intuitively through the process.

Those quiet moments when I’m pouring fragrances and tapping into my creativity are the moments when I truly reconnect with my core. I feel at peace when my environment is clean & calm; when the space around me supports clarity, stillness, and intention.

That’s my version of peace: creativity, solitude, and a space that feels like home to my nervous system.
