We recently had the chance to connect with Christopher Worth and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up pretty early between 5-6, drink a liter of water with electrolytes, and immediately go on a 30 min walk where I record myself talking in a brain-dump sort of fashion. I used to do yoga first but found my mind kept getting distracted by thoughts for the day. So the new rule this fall has been to walk and think out loud first. This all has percolated into a meta rule: “when in doubt, walk it out.”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a professional singer/songwriter and music/film/event producer primarily based in Portland, OR. In the past decade I’ve taken on a side gig in real estate to help counterbalance/fund/ground out the creative projects.
At the current moment I’m preparing for a very special record release in November – we’re mid way through the promo rollout for that currently. Additionally, I’m formalizing a partnership I’ve had with some dear friends and fellow artists into a production company in the new year. They’ve all worked on my record, so this is sort of our beta launch before we move on to more community projects in the new year.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The show coming up is actually a retirement celebration for me – a retirement from the business of music. This is also a birthing of sorts – the beginning of being an artist working for the art itself. Over the 20 years I’ve spent as a professional musician, I’ve been on some amazing journeys around the world and delved deep into what it means to be an artist. Recently, I’ve realized that I spend the vast majority of my time working on the business of being an artist, and this has now overcome the actual creation of art itself. In some ways I have failed at the original goals I set, but I’ve arrived further than I could have ever imagined. I’d like to spend the time I have with renewed focus on the art. I believe this is our first responsibility as artists and is something that is under threat in the current paradigm. I’m really excited for this release.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Grit. Determination. You have to prove yourself to the art by being willing to give all of yourself to it and continually let go of your expectations of what you get back. The process teaches you to love the mystery of life.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
The spiritual essence of the universe is inherently personal – it would demean it to be proven en masse. The journey is an inside job – we are here to reflect this back at one another.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop spending any time at all on the business side of music and focus 100% of my energy on creativity.
