We recently had the chance to connect with Dan Policar and have shared our conversation below.
Dan, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Consistently staying on target with health! Mainly fitness gym and walking and proper nutrition, eating healthy. Avoiding sedentary days and whole days of poor nutrition is the goal!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dan Policar, a Grammy-nominated musician, producer, and composer who’s spent over a decade performing worldwide with Jamaican dancehall superstar Sean Paul. My background spans from big stages to video game consoles, with credits ranging from artists like Ellie Goulding and Fabolous to game soundtracks such as Empire of Sin and The Crimson Diamond.
For me, composing music is storytelling through sound. Years on stage taught me how people react to music in real time, and I use that same instinct to score moments that move people, whether in games, film, or beyond. I’m always exploring that space where emotion and sound becomes story, blending influences from dancehall, hip hop, and jazz to create worlds that feel alive and human.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
During one of my first rehearsals in Jamaica, I watched a bandmate take their single portion of food and share it among everyone who was hungry. Coming from a different background, I had never experienced anything like that before, it showed me what true community looks like. That same spirit is alive right now in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, as artists and neighbors across Jamaica come together to support those most affected. Even when there’s little, there’s always enough to share, a lesson we can all learn from.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that everyone is carrying something, even if we can’t see it. It reminded me that struggle is universal, that no matter how things might look from the outside, everyone is fighting their own battles. Success can make you feel separate from that reality, but suffering brings you closer to it. It teaches empathy, patience, and perspective. May we always stay aware and appreciative of that fact of life.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’m actually far more introverted than people might assume from the work I do. Crowds and being in the spotlight don’t come naturally to me, but sharing publicly has become part of how we connect in today’s world. I don’t always enjoy being front-facing, but I recognize its importance, if my work can reach or inspire someone because I showed up, then it’s worth stepping out of my comfort zone.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I’m as excited to wake up and go to work today as I was when I was a teenager, before I even realized that what I loved could become a career. That sense of curiosity and gratitude hasn’t faded. Every day still feels like an opportunity to create, to learn, and to do something I once only dreamed about.
