Danielle Sprando shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes I wake up I started a little “ritual” over the last 2 years.
Before anything I drink water. Fill my Hydrojug and drink water before coffee. I can’t tell you how much better I feel since having water first.
Secondly I will go to the gym for a workout and if I don’t have time for that, I’ll hop on my treadmill and do a 20 minute walk.
Before getting ready I do a 5 minute meditation and quick journal and write out my to do list. Since owning a business, these few things have helped me stay on track and helped my mental health so much!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Danielle Sprando and I’m the owner of Vixen Beauty Lounge.
A luxury salon in the Portland metro area in oregon. We specialize in low maintenance color, blonding and hair extensions that are seamless and non damaging. Our space is unique, upscale while celebrating all of our stylists individuality.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom! My mom has worked full time ever since I was a small child. During elementary school she worked full time and went to school full time to become a nurse and provide for us. It was instilled in my brain at a young age to work hard and be independent and never depend on anyone financially. I have had a job since I was 16 years old and have a bit of “workaholic” tendencies.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think the fear of hurting people’s feelings or coming off mean has held me back from setting boundaries and standards. Once I opened my business I realized quickly I had to get over that fear and go through it to keep my salon up to the standard I wanted and it’s never been better since facing my fear
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
In the hair world there are so many limiting beliefs. In school your told you have to work Saturdays you have to work evenings. While these things are good to do in the early stage of your career you don’t have to do them forever. Hair IS a real job. It’s not a hobby, and it should be ran like a business because it is one.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I like to think I’m doing what I was born to do. I wanted to go to hair school at a young age. I loved getting my hair done and loved how I felt after and I remember thinking how fun it would be to work in a salon when I’m older and dress up and hangout with my girlfriends. And now it’s literally my job. I tried traditional college and it wasn’t for me
