Denishia Macon-Lynn shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Denishia, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I lose track of time whenever I step fully into the creative process. For me, designing isn’t just about putting visuals together, it’s about entering a flow where ideas and solutions come alive. I’ll often start with a visual communication problem, like how to make a brand’s message resonate or how to capture the emotion of a moment, and before I know it, hours have passed. In those moments, I’m not just designing, I’m storytelling, problem-solving, and building something that feels bigger than myself. I go into my own head, exploring colors, textures, and layouts until the pieces click together. That process reminds me why I started Macon Designs in the first place: to transform ideas into visuals that connect and inspire. Losing track of time in design always brings me back to myself, because it’s where my purpose and passion meet.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Denishia Macon-Lynn, and I am the founder of Macon Designs®, a creative brand rooted in helping small businesses and organizations elevate their visual presence. Through branding, design, and storytelling, I help others clarify their message and connect with their audiences in meaningful ways. What makes my brand unique is that it’s not just about making things look good, it’s about creating designs with purpose, intention, and heart. Over the years, I’ve expanded into sub-brands like Suplex GFX, which taps into my passion for professional wrestling by creating designs that capture the energy of current storylines. Today, I balance my freelance work with my full-time role as a Graphics Specialist for a state agency, which gives me a wider lens on how design impacts both individual brands and large organizations. Right now, I’m focused on building more digital products, expanding my audience, and positioning Macon Designs® as not just a design studio but a resource for transformation and growth.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I used to believe that being different was a weakness, that not fitting in meant something was wrong with me. Over time, I realized that the very things that made me different were also the things that made me powerful. Standing out isn’t a negative; it’s an opportunity to bring fresh perspectives and unique gifts into the world. My creativity, vision, and ability to see things differently have allowed me to carve a path that doesn’t look like anyone else’s. Now, I fully embrace being different, because it’s the fuel that allows me to effect positive change.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self: You are special. You are unique. Stay that way. Never force yourself to shrink into someone else’s mold or tone down your brilliance to fit in. The qualities that make you stand out are the same ones that will open doors and create opportunities you can’t even imagine yet. Trust your gifts, keep nurturing your creativity, and know that you are enough exactly as you are.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I rely deeply on the wisdom of King Solomon, particularly his prayer for discernment to lead with clarity and justice. Early in his reign, Solomon humbly asked God for “a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong,” rather than requesting personal riches or power. God granted him not only wisdom, but “very great discernment and breadth of mind,” equipping him to understand even the most complex situations.
One iconic moment that reflects this gift is Solomon’s fair and profound judgment between two women claiming to be a child’s mother, a decision that revealed deep insight into human emotion and justice.
His example teaches me that true leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about having the clarity to see what matters most and the compassion to act wisely. When I’m faced with creative or strategic decisions, especially those that affect my brand, clients, or my own purpose, I lean on that principle of discernment.
It reminds me to pause, listen deeply, differentiate between what’s urgent and what’s essential, and then move forward with integrity. Solomon’s legacy continues to inspire me to lead thoughtfully, creatively, and with a heart anchored in wisdom and purpose.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell the story that it doesn’t matter where you start, because your beginning doesn’t define your ending. That the only real limitations are the ones you place on yourself, and once you believe in your gifts, you can use them to change the world. I want my legacy to be one of creativity, resilience, and impact, that I used my talents not only to build a business but to inspire others to step into their own purpose. If people remember me as someone who used her art and vision to empower others, then I’ll know I lived well.
