We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dennis Wilson Jr.. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Dennis, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me now starts around 7am, waking up and getting ready for work. I’m a high school teacher so my day starts at 8:20am and typically ends around 3:35pm. I’m teaching students printing, graphic design, web design, and life. After work my day varies from working sporting events for my school, prepping & running my nightclub for the week, designing layouts for my customers around the world, planning my upcoming events, being a liaison for others, and running my Photography/Content creation studio with my wife. An early day ends around 8-9pm and a late day may end between midnight – 3am (on weekends).
Each day has a lot in it and often I’m mentally taxed but that’s what I signed up for.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Dennis Wilson Jr. is a visionary entrepreneur, lifestyle curator, and cultural connector whose work bridges nightlife, entertainment, and community experiences. As the creative force behind MRDWILSON.COM and founder of venues like The Oakk Room Restaurant and The Oakk Haus Nightclub in Buffalo, NY, Dennis has built a reputation for transforming ordinary nights into unforgettable moments.
What makes Dennis unique is his ability to merge upscale vibes with accessibility, creating spaces and events that bring people together—whether it’s his signature Presidential All Black Affair, the Miami Nights All White Affair (which are both in their 15th year of existance and garner over 2000+ guests), or innovative Ultimate Brunch (Three Brunches with different genres held at the same time) and event concepts that have reshaped Buffalo’s social scene.
Beyond nightlife, Dennis is expanding his brand into large-scale lifestyle events like the upcoming Black Wealth Weekend, designed to merge entertainment with empowerment, giving professionals opportunities to connect, invest, and grow together.
With upcoming projects ranging from conferences to multi-city cultural events, Dennis continues to push the boundaries of what it means to blend culture, community, and celebration. Dennis does this while being an educator for the past 26 years.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The earliest moment of me feeling powerful had to be in 2009. That was the year my event promotions business took off and it’s been going strong ever since. I started to become a household name and a rising star in the African American Community of Buffalo, NY. People were tuning into what I started to develop and it started to increase my influence. This eventually led to opening a restaurant as well as other businesses and opportunities.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
For quite a few years people would call for advise but only recently have I embraced that I really know a lot about business and people. I currently provide mentorship for a former colleague/employee, and the information that I’ve given has helped their business expand. I take pride in only giving advice that I know will work and has been tested. Ethics are a big part of my makeup and being very ethical is something embedded into my fabric of life.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me, but I do believe my success causes people to hide their true self from me. I’m naturally a quiet, motivated and productive person. I’m not a loud person, so my natural personality isn’t to just talk. My preference is to know people and be authentic. When comfortable I love to laugh, joke, party, etc. When it’s time to work, I like to be productive and efficient. I prefer people to know who I am and what I have going on.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Right now I’m preparing for retirement. Most of the people in my life never really had the knowledge to properly prepare for retirement. I’m getting things in order so me and my wife can really enjoy life as well as spend time with our kids and grandkids. I want to see them have every opportunity for success and a quality life.
