Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with douglas busch

We recently had the chance to connect with douglas busch and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning douglas, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
I have been designing architecture and building spaces out for over 30 years. The new clients I am coming in contact with are angry, disconcerted, and can’t believe prices now.

They can’t believe how long it takes to get a permit in Malibu and how expensive it is.

Like everything else they are listening to mis-information and wrong info…they only want to hear what they want to hear.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have several interests and have done many different things in my life. I am a gemologist, architectural designer, contractor for residence and commercial build outs, started several foundations to give back for my active life, I have designed the healthiest housing system in the world for MCS community, producing more art for my different projects. I am now working on the Genos Center Foundation to eradicate genocide around the world through art and education. I still do free reviews of young artists portfolios to help guiding their growth.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Al Weber in Carmel secured my job with Ansel Adams and was my mentor and main support for my growth. Peter Bodnar at the Univ. of IL Champaign who guided me and put me on my path as an artist and mentor to other people.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
Continually. It is always important to review any project or direction you went to analyze what was successful and what flopped. I have to admit, out of all the ideas and projects I have started or supported, I have to say if I have a 20% success rate is high. Many of the projects were ahead of their time.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire any father who is committed to his kids even after divorce. I had my kids every weekend, all holidays, and vacations. They have traveled around the world with me and I have always supported their dreams ventures important to them. It may seem simple but if one studies kids and parents it is not easy. I am only interested in folks character and parenting to work with. Obviously they have to be honest and have integrity.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Hopefully they will say I always gave of myself to help folks to get a a direction to encourage their own work. I hope they will say my own art was important and made available. Helping artists through critiques and monetary support. I hope my kids and granddaughters will say I was honest, supportive, and giving.
