We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Candice Seti Psy,D.. Check out our conversation below.
Candice, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Absolutely integrity-100%!!! Intelligence and energy are both wonderful things but they are not really things we can control. Intelligence is generally a product of genes, heredity, upbringing. There’s not a whole lot we can do about it. We can certainly further our knowledge and education which is very respectable, but our baseline intelligence is generally not something we have a ton of power over.
Energy is a wonderful thing to see in people as well, but it can often be a result of biology and extraneous lifestyle factors; like work demands, children, household, etc.
But integrity is something you can choose, create, and embrace every single day. It is seen in the way to carry yourself, the way, you treat yourself, and the way you treat others. It’s seen in your choices, your priorities and your values. It is something I deeply respect in others.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a practice online. To supplement the work I do with my clients, I am also a Certified Nutrition Coach, a Certified Weight Management Specialist, a Certified Expert Life Coach, a Certified Personal Trainer, a Certified Stress Management Specialist, and a Certified Insomnia Treatment Clinician.
In my practice, I work one-one-one with individuals, helping them understand their maladaptive behaviors and thought patterns, while replacing them with a healthier perspective that allows them to overcome self-sabotage and thrive in their lives. I provide services online via video counseling as well as providing numerous do-it-yourself programs addressing weight loss, binge eating, insomnia, and specialty populations like PCOS and menopause. My primary goal is to help my patients understand their barriers and achieve success– through behavioral, lifestyle, and cognitive changes. My previous book, Shatter the Yoyo, provides readers with unique strategies, tips, and tricks on weight management, that can be incorporated into a long-term healthy lifestyle, instead of a short-term regimen that sets you up to regain weight.
My most recent book, The Self-Sabotage Behavior Workbook, takes this same concept of self-sabotage but extends it beyond just weight management to apply to any and all areas.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
In a general sense, I would have to say my mother. She was very unique in being an entrepreneur at a time when this was fairly uncommon for women. I was always fascinated by watching her work and seeing how she managed so many different aspects of what she did. I’m certain that I inherited my work ethic from her.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
As many do, I experienced some trauma early in my life; my mother died when I was 13, I experienced a horrible car accident when I was 16, and my father died when I was 20. All of these experiences together are what brought me to psychology initially. I realized early that I wanted to help others experiencing distress. But it wasn’t until the early years of my private practice that I realized how powerful my pain had made me. I continued to find ways to let it connect me with my clients so I could work with them on a deeper, more significant level. I believe that my early pain is what has really allowed me to be so successful in what I do.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Within the world of body image and weight management, there are so many! Media and social media flood us with images of what is “healthy” or desirable. Whether it’s six-pack abs, or a giant booty, there’s always a marketing gimmick letting us know that we want that and there’s a quick and easy way to achieve it. The weight loss world has always been filled with these fad diets promising overnight results- whether it’s a diet based on restriction, a new fat burning supplement, or even now a GLP-1 medication, none of these things actually address the root of the problem, which is usually our relationship with food. So, it doesn’t really matter what diet you go on or what medication you take: if you don’t address the core issue, the problem will keep resurfacing.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Well, I always like to think that the work I do with my clients is unique in that it’s not a diet, it’s not temporary, and it’s not short-term. So, I like to think that the benefit for them really comes years down the line when they have maintained and achieved long-term success. That is 7-10 years down the line and even longer!
