Eileen Corse shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Eileen, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Being a professional artist, I wear many hats. Not only am I an artist, but I am also a promoter, a website designer, an accountant, a delivery person, a photographer, a packaging person, an estimator, and the list could go on.
Many people assume that being an artist is glamorous. It is hard, hard work. Sure, the creative part is enjoyable, but that too can also be stressful.
Having said that, I am so very happy to have the skillset to achieve success in the art world.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Eileen Corse. I am a professional artist, meaning I make my living solely from my artwork.
I am a painter. I paint with oil paints on canvases. I apply the paint in my custom application with a 3 inch pallet knife. My style is distinctive and people can instantly recognize my artwork.
Several years ago, I opened an art gallery and represented 40 artists from all over the United States and Canada. I ran it for eight years. Then I began thinking it was time for me to focus on MY art instead of promoting other artists. That is when I moved into my studio that is dedicated solely to my art.
My sales took off! I found myself working tirelessly keeping up with demand. Not a bad problem to have!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
My prior career was that of a Court Reporter. I stayed with that job for almost 14 years. That is a job that was a challenge for me. and I had to work really hard at it.
I am more of a right-brain person, the creative side.
It all changed when I had my last child at age 41 and quit working. I soon became bored and took up drawing. That’s where it all started.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say love yourself. Trust yourself.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is real. I try to keep my personal life out of social media. Many years ago I posted a photo of a baby, a relative. Someone took that photo and painted her and posted it on social media. It was a shock because he was a stranger to me and he didn’t ask me for permission and was slow on taking it down.
Since then, my personal photos do not make it to social media platforms. But I love keeping my artwork fresh on all platforms. It does take time, but I think it’s worth it to get my art before more eyes.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Oh, my, YES. When I found my creative side, I never looked back. I was born to be an artist.
When I was a young girl, I enjoyed drawing. I enjoyed it so much that I told my parents that I wanted to be an artist when I grow up. I was told that it was not possible. That artists starve. So I chose the court reporter career.
I thank God everyday that I didn’t go through life without finding my love for art.
