We’re looking forward to introducing you to Emily Strulson. Check out our conversation below.
Emily, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
It is not linear. At any time I have several applications submitted for art shows, I am preparing for shows, following up on past shows, meeting with clients/buyers and often talking to someone who will lead me to my next exhibition or sale. Being an artist is an organic and intuitive journey with turns one can never anticipate. I am a painter but I still spend time on the computer like everyone else.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a semi abstract painter using acrylic on canvas, exhibiting my work nationally and internationally. Recently, I have focused on a series of images from West Virginia trying to capture the feeling of deep snow as I fear our warming winters will one day minimize this experience. I am often influenced by what is happening around me therefore living in the Washington DC area some of pieces can be politically charged. I am known in my community as an artist, activist, teacher, town council representative and influencer serving on local boards in the community.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I am a surprise third child so I often went along with whatever was happening in our home or at times, left behind! I remember being left at a soccer field playing on the monkey bars realizing my family forgot me. I knew they would realize it and come back for me which they did. I learned to trust myself in those moments and be independent.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are very talented, loved and beautiful.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I have heard people close to me say, “I wear my heart on my sleeve.” I am not pretending to be anything other than who I am and what I believe in. I am honesty to a fault as often the truth is not what people want to see.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Giving mental and verbal energy to people who have made it clear I am not a priority in their life
