We recently had the chance to connect with Erik Shaw and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erik , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
That Writing a book will lead to huge financial gains.
This industry is tough to make any money in. We are very open about that with our clients. To counter that we try to provide the best product possible on a reasonable budget. Stories are important. And without Authors we don’t have a company so taking care of our writers is key and setting realistic expectations for them is important. We want all our writers to continue to write and continue to work with us in the future.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Erik Shaw, and I run Black Vellum Premier Publishing services. I have been working in this industry since 2011, and we take pride in creating a unique and affordable publishing experience.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I don’t think I have ever felt powerful, but I remember when I started to feel respected. And to me, that’s far more important. When the media would
mention me or my help would be requested for higher-profile projects, that’s when I realized that my words mattered, people were paying attention, and they were willing to pay for my advice. That is a huge responsibility and an honor. I am grateful.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me to work harder. It also taught me that when you are down, it’s really easy to stay there, and that’s exactly what your adversaries and competition want. They want you to quit. It’s up to you to fight through those lows and climb the mountain and get where you want to be. Or don’t and live with “what if’s” and that’s not something I was ever interested in.
Do the work. Give it 100%. Enjoy the rewards.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d like to think so! I try to be as genuine as possible at all times. It’s not always easy. The better you do in life, the easier it is for people to try to knock you down. Fans don’t always stay fans, but you always need to be you. The real people who support you will be there through the good and bad. The fake ones will fade into the background. All of them will pay attention to how you handle yourself.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
The importance of a small circle of loyal friends. This is such a critical factor to professional and personal growth.
I know 100’s of people, but I only have 3 or 4 genuine friends. They keep me grounded and allow me to be me.
