Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Esther Sakyi

Esther Sakyi shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Esther, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I feel like Im walking a path

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Ghanaian-born creative based in the United States, passionate about storytelling and fostering connections within the African diaspora. Through my company Dream Team International, I lead an amazing creative collective dedicated to spotlighting entrepreneurs and creatives of African descent through engaging interviews and impactful networking events.

I also wrote, produce and directed On The Fence (OTF) a scripted series that follows a group of college friends as they navigate faith, identity, and personal growth, offering a heartfelt portrayal of the journey to embracing Christ.

Through my work, I’m committed to reshaping how African stories are told and celebrated globally.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was younger, I didn’t believe I was creative or even had a talent. I used to wonder what my “thing” was because I couldn’t sing, and I definitely couldn’t draw. Back then, I didn’t recognize creativity beyond those traditional forms. Now, I know that I am talented, and that I am a creative. My gift just expresses itself differently.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
To trust yourself and trust the process. You are unique and your voice matters.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Its not about how smart you are, its about how likeable you are

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was a lover of all things Africa. Passionate about our culture, our people, and our stories. My goal was to highlight entrepreneurs and creatives, to tell our story, for us, and I did it with pride.

I want my story to be that I created space for creatives to express themselves and inspired them to build their own stage, instead of waiting for someone else to invite them on one.
