We’re looking forward to introducing you to EV Mae. Check out our conversation below.
EV, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me includes going to school and hanging out with friends afterwards.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Ny name is EV Mae and I am a singer/songwriter. I have been singing since I was 3 years old and singing out since I was 9. I started writing and recording my own music at 13. Currently I am on a record label in Clarksville TN called Clarksville Creative Sound. I am also on a reality TV show called Small Town Sound that is centered around the artists and producer of Clarksville Creative Sound.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before worldly views became a part of my life, I was a young and confident girl. I loved being around my small group of people and was very proud of who I was. When I started to grow up, people weren’t as accepting of someone who was different than them or someone who had different interests and hobbies. A lot of people thought I was silly for singing and following my dreams and that crushed my spirit a little bit. For a while I felt ashamed of what I loved. My love started to fade and no longer brought me joy. At one point I didn’t even want to sing anymore. Later on, I figured out I was just hanging around the wrong people. There were people out there that loved what I did and thought it was amazing. I hung around others that were not ashamed of me or thought I was silly. They brought my light back. They reminded me it was okay to be who I am and not look down on myself for what I find enjoyment in.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“Give yourself grace”
This is a quote that I remind myself of every single day. There was a lady whom I loved to talk to. Her name was Jill Kelly. She was someone who helped remind me that I can fully be myself. I am very hard on myself a lot of the time because I expect perfection from myself. She saw this and reminded me that I need to give myself grace. You’re going to make mistakes and sometimes big ones but that’s okay. That’s called being human.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
When people meet me in public or at shows, I am 100% my true self. I do not change when I walk out my door everyday. I don’t want to be fake around people. I want people to see the real me. I don’t want to hide who I am around others. You can ask anyone around me, when you see me on stage, that is exactly who I am off stage.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am doing something outdoor. Whether that be fishing, hunting, or even just playing with my dog. I love to take in the beautiful world that our God has given us. When I am in a deer stand I take that time to really connect with Him. When I am fishing I thank him for everything He has done for me. When I am playing with my dog, I am amazed at the beauty He was able to create.
