We’re looking forward to introducing you to Heather Moody. Check out our conversation below.
Heather, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
As I review this year with all of its highs and lows, a proudest moment was being named a Condé Nast Top Travel Specialist. It’s thrilling to be included in such excellent company, especially in an industry that has grown substantially this year.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As the founder of Sage Travel, a boutique agency, I help create unforgettable travel experiences for my clients. Much of my day is filled with planning vacation travel to bucket list destinations or trips in celebration of big milestones. I was a concierge in luxury hotels for many years, so the other facet of my business is the Concierge Collective, an ongoing partnership for personal lifestyle services.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Before this chapter, I was actually a professional dancer. My mentors were integral to nurturing my work ethic. As a young performer, you study the history of your art form while practicing constantly to master it. You learn how imperative it is to show up fully prepared for your fellow dancers. There really is so much sacrifice, but it’s all worth it when you build something that is meaningful to others. I’ve carried so much of this into my entrepreneurial journey and am grateful for my creative foundation and outlook. It serves me well, even in an entirely different field!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would remind younger Heather that it’s bold to pursue many different passions. It could be seen as a virtue to stick to one career lane or employer, but now it’s advantageous to have many skills. Even if those passions were creative in nature, and it felt like there was nothing you could “do” with the knowledge, it will all contribute to the life you will lead, the interests and community you’ll find, and the businesses you’ll build.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I do my best to embrace authenticity in both public and private life. What you’ll find of me in the public space is very much what you’ll get in person: candid, detail and design obsessed, creative, curious, lighthearted, and hardworking. Of course, running a travel agency requires emotional intelligence and discretion. So, I’ve embraced being the face of Sage Travel while fiercely protecting my clients’ privacy and acting as their travel guide and advocate.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Being in nature, especially a desert landscape, brings me peace. Whenever I’m feeling stuck or seeking a chance to return to myself, a trip to a remote and scenic area is the best medicine. I look forward to launching group retreats set in desert locations, with elements of wellness and a creative focus. It would be incredible to bring this sense of peace to others and perhaps change perceptions of how a desert trip can feel. Atacama, Chile, here we come!
